College Information
I have the greatest pleasure as College Master to share with you the vibrant and exciting environment of the Lee Woo Sing College (WS) and its community of aspiring students and dedicated faculty and staff.
WS was founded in 2007 with the generous support of College Founder and Patron, Dr. LI Wo Hing and Dr. LEE Woo Sing. The College is by design medium in size among the nine colleges at CUHK, and currently has a student population of over 1,500. The College is nested in a picturesque location with the mountain on its back and the beautiful Tolo Harbour at its front.
The motto of the College is Wisdom, Humanity, Integrity, and Harmony. Over the years, WS has earned a reputation as one of the most innovative and popular colleges at CUHK. This success is due to the visionary leadership of our late Founding Master, Prof. Joseph LAU, the unwavering support of the Committee of Overseers, the dedicated commitment of College faculty, staff and students for the past years.
In what follows, I would like to highlight some key accomplishments of the College, and exciting directions we are pursuing in the next few years:
Student Development:
At WS, nurturing the talents and characters of our students is at the heart of everything we do. We provide ample opportunities for academic exchanges, internships and visits to broaden their horizons. Our strong support for student activities helps them develop skills in leadership, teamwork, and planning. As a mid-size college, we strike a unique balance, offering a close-knit yet diverse community where students can enjoy quality interactions with each other and pastoral care from our passionate faculty and staff.
Green Living:
Our breath-taking view of the Tolo Harbour reminds us daily of our responsibility to protect the environment. This ethos is reflected in our College emblem, composed of three ancient Chinese characters of People (人), Mountain (山) and Harmony (和). LWS College leads in environmental initiatives, being the first at CUHK to install smart meters in every hostel room, allowing students to easily monitor and adjust their electricity consumption. We also installed rooftop solar power system, implemented food leftover separation to promote waste recycling since the beginning operation of our canteen. In 2023, we installed fresh air units (FAUs) in the canteen, resulting in substantial energy saving than before. Moving forward, we are committed to further efforts in monitoring and enhancing the air quality throughout the College.
Smart Campus:
Since its inception, WS has continuously enhanced its hostel infrastructure with the adoption of relevant technologies, guided by our faculty members with expertise in the area. We were pioneers at CUHK to introduce the access card system (“WS Access+ Card”) for improving hostel security and access. Our smart meters and FAUs serve as platforms to engage students in special energy saving initiatives. We added a public elevator in 2018 to improve accessibility for people in need. LWS College is the first to develop our own Apps (WoosApp and WoosApp+ ) to foster information sharing and communication with students. Looking ahead, we are excited to be exploring some AI-related projects in the coming years.
Cultural Diversity:
Cultural enrichment is a cornerstone of the College experience. Our late College Patron, Dr. LEE Woo Sing, was a highly acclaimed Chinese opera singer and instrument player. The College has over the years hosted many memorable musical events performed by top-tier artists. We were the first at CUHK to offer a credit-bearing course in ‘Experience the Kunqu and Peking Opera”, and our WS Choir, known for its harmonious performances, has been invited to perform in Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Beijing, and Malaysia. Additionally, WS staff, students and alumni have collaborated on a unique porcelain project featuring a hundred calligraphic renditions of the word “Harmony,” which is now a prominent landmark “Wall of Hundred Harmony” at the College entrance. Our plan in the future will continue to celebrate arts and heritage, including exhibitions of Chinese paintings and rare collections.
The above are just a few snapshots of Lee Woo Sing College. For a better picture, I warmly invite you to personally visit and experience our campus in real life — take a photo in front of the “Wall of Hundred Harmony,” enjoy the coffee and ice-cream at Cafe Tolo with its breath-taking views, or savour the authentic Shanghai cuisine at our restaurant, and above all, feel the vibrancy and warmth of our WS community!
