Q1: What is the curriculum of the Programme?

Students are required to complete a minimum of 33 units of courses (3 units per course). Most courses have 13 classes per term and 1 class per week (around 3 hours).

Creative Project I (SOSC7002) &

Thesis in Applied Social Science I (SOSC7003) &

Qualitative Research
(choose 1 from the “Qualitative Research” category in the course list of respective specialization)

Quantitative Research
(choose 1 from the “Quantitative Research” category in the course list of respective specialization)

Domain-Specific Analytical Methods
(choose 1 from the “Domain-Specific Analytical Methods” category in the course list of respective specialization)

Students can claim specialization in one of the following areas:

  1. Healthy and sustainable smart cities
  2. Chinese economy
  3. Physical environment and resource management
  4. Public policy and governance for sustainable development
  5. Media technologies, industry and practices
  6. Inequality, poverty and social service management
  7. Population studies, diversity and inclusion
  8. Crime, law and justice

Q2: How many terms are there in one academic year?

There are two academic terms in each academic year.

Term 1: September to December
Term 2: January to April/May

Q3: What are the differences between Full-time and Part-time study?

Study Period
Full-time: 3 years
Part-time: 4 years

Course Load
Full-time: up to 4 courses per term
Part-time: 1 – 2 courses per term

According to the University Regulations, all Full-time students are NOT allowed to take up any full-time employment, paid or unpaid, during term time.

Q4: When are the classes held?

Classes are usually scheduled in weekday daytime/evening. There may also be classes scheduled on Saturday. The course schedule is subject to the arrangement of the course offering units each year.

Q5: Do I need to find a supervisor when studying the programme?

Yes. You should explore if there are any potential faculty members in your desired field and contact them with an expression of interest before submitting your application. However, it is fine if you cannot secure a supervisor at the application stage.

Q6: What documents should I submit in my online application?
  • Certified academic certificates and transcripts of your previous study
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • A one-page statement of study purpose
  • Proof of English Language Proficiency
Q7: Do I need to submit hard copies of the documents at the application stage?

No. Hard copies are needed when you receive an admission offer.

Q8: Is there any interview?

Shortlisted applicants may be invited for an interview.

Q9: When can I know my application result?

Admission offers will be issued on a rolling basis. Please check the status via the Online Application System for the Postgraduate Programme from time to time.
