Sketching Fuji

10 June 2023

As travel restrictions relaxed, the College organized a cultural trip for students from 3 to 9 June, 2023 on the theme of “Sketching Fuji.” During this journey, students not only forged deep friendships among themselves but also learned a lot about sketching and drawing under the guidance of the teachers from the Ling Ngai Association. They also had the chance to experience the unique scenery and culture of Japan.

Before embarking on the journey, Prof. Ng Yuet-lau, a renowned master of Lingnan-style traditional Chinese painting and the Founding Chairperson of the Ling Ngai Association conducted a workshop introducing the Lingnan painting style to the students and showcased many outstanding artworks.  She also demonstrated sketching techniques on the spot, which inspired everyone present.

This journey started in Yokohama, passing through places like Kamakura and Enoshima, and finally arrived at the scenic spots near Mount Fuji, such as Lake Yamanaka and Lake Kawaguchi. It was mid-summer, and Japan was adorned with beautiful hydrangeas in shades of blue and purple, tempting everyone to capture their elegance and beauty with brushes. The mysterious and solemn shrines left a lasting impression on the students, and they sketched the fleeting moments there. At the shores of Enoshima, the stunning combination of the sea and rolling hills captured their hearts. Despite facing some challenges on the environment, students still took out their brushes and painted on mountaintops amidst the sea breeze. These landscape drawings attracted many tourists who appreciated and praised their talents. Of course, the highlight of the trip was Mount Fuji, which was depicted from different angles and heights by the students, each expressing their unique feelings and perceptions through their sketches.

In addition to exploring the breath-taking landscapes, students received one-on-one guidance from the teachers of Ling Ngai Association, who offered valuable advice to each student’s sketches, helping them improve their skills continuously in the evenings. Especially on the last day of the sketching journey, every student presented their favourite artwork, sharing it with the teachers and teammates, leading to interactive discussions and encouragement. These precious artworks will remain unforgettable and touching memories for each participant.

The seven-day journey also strengthened the bond between teachers and students, with moments of joy, companionship, and personal growth becoming cherished memories in their hearts. Even after the trip ended, they remained in contact, exchanging their feelings about the journey and their future plans with one another.
