Prof. JIA Jiaya has developed a world’s leading image deblurring technology to rectify blurriness in photos caused by lighting and camera shaking. It is more effective and efficient by increasing the image clearness by 100 times, and not more than 10 seconds are needed to process a photo with 1,000,000 pixels.

Prof. Michael Rung-Tsong Lyu has been co-awarded the distinction of 2010 IEEE Reliability Society Engineer of the Year Award by the IEEE Reliability Society. Engineering of the Year Award is one of the highest awards offered from the IEEE Reliability Society.

The bi-annual Challenge Cup is considered the premier national competition of extra-curricular technological projects of university students. Students of CUHK won the Hong Kong and Macau Cup, the fifth gold cup CUHK has got in five consecutive competitions.

International Symposium on Physical Design (ISPD) Contest is an annual contest in VLSI CAD attracting many research teams from academia and industry to participate. The contest is organized by IBM and the result will be announced in the annual conference, ISPD.

Undergraduate students recently won a gold medal at the iGEM (international Genetic Engineered Machine) Asia Regional Jamboree. They also won the Best BioBrick Measurement Approach and the Best New BioBrick Part (Natural) awards.

ACM ICPC is the largest computer programming contest in the world. It provides college students with an opportunity to demonstrate and sharpen their problem-solving and computing skills. The contest is considered to be the “Olympics of Computer Programming”.

Mr. Li Liang, a MPhil student supervised by Prof. Young Fung Yu, received the Outstanding Thesis Award 2010 for his thesis entitled “Obstacle-avoiding Rectilinear Steiner Tree”.

Mr Wenhao Chen received the Best Student Paper Award in the 11th International Conference on Web-Age Information Management (WAIM 2010) for his paper entitled “Context-aware Basic Level Concepts Detection in Folksonomies.” WAIM is a leading international conference in Web data management.

2010 Intel Cup Undergraduate Electronic Design Contest – Embedded System Design Invitational Contest invited 76 universities and 165 team from China mainland, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Turkey, Ukraine, Mexico and the United States.

The paper is titled “Distributed QoS Evaluation for Real-World Web Services”. ICWS is a prime international conference in service computing. A total of 221 papers were submitted to the conference this year, and two paper awards were given. The CUHK paper won the only best student paper award.

Their paper “Collaborative Reliability Prediction for Service-Oriented Systems” was presented at the 32nd ACM/IEEE International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE). ICSE is the most influential international conference on software engineering. The CUHK paper won one of the five distinguished paper awards.

The IBM Ph.D. Fellowship Awards Program is an intensely competitive worldwide program, which honors exceptional Ph.D. students who have an interest in solving problems that are important to IBM and fundamental to innovation in many academic disciplines and areas of study.

The ACM Fellows Program was established in 1993 with the aim of honouring ACM members who have outstanding technical and professional achievements in information technology. The honour recognizes his extraordinary contributions to stochastic analysis of parallel storage and communication systems.

Mr. Yung’s thesis entitled “Edge Splitting-off and Network Design Problems” is motivated by the degree bounded network design problem.

Dr. Zhu Jianke, a PhD student supervised by Prof. Michael Lyu, has been selected as the winner of the Faculty’s Outstanding Thesis Award 2009.

Prof. Fu Wai-chee Ada, who has been awarded the Influential Paper Award at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Data Engineering (ICDE) for her co-authored paper “Efficient Time Series Matching by Wavelets” presented 10 years ago.

Dr. XIAO Xiaokui, a PhD student supervised by Prof. Tao Yufei, has been selected as the Winner of Physical/Mathematical Science for 2009 Young Scientist Awards by Hong Kong Institution of Science.

Mr. LIU Xiaopei was the Champion of the Postgraduate Student Research Paper competition 2008-09. The event was organised by the IEEE (HK) Computational Intelligence Chapter.

CUHK ranked 20th among the 100 teams chosen from a field of 7,109 teams from 1,838 universities in 88 countries competing on six continents.

The ACM programming contest is the oldest, largest, and most prestigious in the world. This year, it attracted 6,700 teams representing 1,821 universities in 83 countries. Only 100 teams will advance to the World Finals.

Prof. Patrick P.C. Lee, who won the best paper award in the ACM CoNext 2008 Conference. The work is “Opportunistic Use of Client Repeaters to Improve Performance of WLANs”.

Prof. Shengyu Zhang, who won the best paper award in ICALP. The work is “Making Classical Honest Verifier Zero Knowledge Protocols Secure against Quantum Attacks”.

Prof. Lap Chi Lau of being the “first” computer scientist to receive the CMS (Canadian Mathematical Society) Doctoral Prize. The CMS Doctoral Prize was inaugurated since 1997 to recognize outstanding performance by a doctoral student who graduated from a Canadian University.

Mr. Li XU was awarded the Microsoft Research Asia Fellowship this year (2008-2009). The fellowship program is designed to empower and encourage PhD students in the Asia-Pacific region to realize their potential in computer science-related research as well as recognizing and awarding outstanding PhD students.
