Migration

The migration cluster will be devoted to conducting and fostering research on migration in Asia and beyond Asia. In the past decade, despite some rising on the nationalism or localism, globalization is an irreversible given the non-stopping trend of human migration. People migrate from home countries to other countries, or from hometown to other places in same countries, voluntarily or involuntarily. Many people move to multiple places, or return. The move of human population has important social consequences and been put onto government agendas, as well as the interest of scholars and the public.
The purpose of this cluster is to develop theoretical understanding of migration, and to generate empirical findings for policy and public discussion. The cluster will also promote comparative research on migration, and will link Asian, European, and North American researchers strategically to develop a global perspective on migration. Joint collaborative research activities are expected.

The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Xi’an Jiaotong University Joint Research Centre on Migration

Connected with the migration cluster, we also have established The Chinese University of Hong Kong – Xi’an Jiaotong University Joint Research Centre on Migration (香港中文大學-西安交通大學人口遷移聯合研究中心) in 2018. The research centre serves as a subsidiary research unit of the Center for population research hosted by the Department of Sociology. It collaborates with the Institute for Population and Development Studies hosted by the School of Public Policy and Administration at Xi’an Jiaotong University. The joint centre mainly focuses its effort on relevant research covering an extensive range of topics including international immigration and emigration, internal migration in China, relevant social policies and economic impacts. It has been organizing research seminars, workshops, and conferences in Hong Kong and Xi’an, aiming to create a platform for migration scholars in Hong Kong, mainland China and beyond.
