Programme outcome (PO1):
PO1: (for level 1) ask and respond to simple questions, convey minimal meaning, and satisfy a number of immediate needs based on everyday topics.
S&L1: understand and reply to utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammar points at the sentence level in daily conversations
S&L2: apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily conversations with appropriate usage
S&L3: communicate fluently with selected vocabulary items and grammatical patterns at the sentence level in daily settings
S&L4: comprehend daily conversations and give appropriate responses at the sentence level
S&L5: present ideas at the sentence level in daily communication settings
R1: understand basic knowledge of Chinese characters (e.g. radicals, stroke order, etc.) and read commonly used basic vocabulary and phrases
R2: master Chinese characters commonly used in daily life and read short sentences
R3: read and understand sentences written with vocabulary and grammar learned in class
R4: read and understand short paragraphs based on familiar daily topics written with vocabulary and grammar learned in class
W1: copy and write a small number of Chinese characters and vocabulary items
W2: write Chinese characters commonly used in daily life and use Chinese characters to write short sentences
W3: use Chinese characters to write short messages and respond to simple questions
Programme outcome (PO2):
PO2: (for levels 2-3) participate in simple conversations on predictable topics, obtain information by asking and answering questions, combine learned materials to convey meaning, and satisfy personal needs and social demands.
S&L1: understand and reply to short connected utterances containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in most real-life conversations
S&L2: apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real-life conversations with appropriate usage
S&L3: communicate fluently with selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in short connected utterances in most real-life settings
S&L4: comprehend discourse and conversations and give appropriate responses in short connected utterances
S&L5: present ideas in short connected utterances in most real-life communication settings
R1: have a certain amount of knowledge on Chinese characters and be able to infer the meaning of new vocabulary items based on known Chinese characters
R2: read and understand paragraphs based on daily life written with familiar vocabulary and grammar
R3: read and understand paragraphs based on daily life, culture, or social topics written with mostly learned content and a small amount of new vocabulary
R4: read and understand short articles based on daily life, culture, or social topics written with mostly learned content and a small amount of new vocabulary
W1: write short paragraphs using learned Chinese characters to provide information on topics based on daily life
W2: use learned Chinese characters to express opinions on familiar topics based on daily life
W3: write paragraphs using Chinese characters to complete basic written communication requirements in a work environment

PO3: (for level 4) actively participate in conversations on various topics in some formal and most informal settings, handle a wide variety of linguistic tasks with communicative strategies, and effectively deal with unanticipated complications in communication, satisfying requirements of school and work situations.
S&L1: understand and reply to professional discourse containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in real-life settings
S&L2: apply selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures at the discourse level in real-life professional conversations with appropriate usage
S&L3: communicate fluently in professional discourse containing selected vocabulary items and grammatical structures in real-life settings
S&L4: comprehend professional discourse and give appropriate responses at the discourse level
S&L5: present ideas at the discourse level in real-life professional settings
R1: master a certain number of Chinese characters and be able to infer the meaning of new vocabulary items based on existing knowledge of Chinese characters and context
R2: read and understand articles related to familiar topics based on daily life, culture, or society
R3: read and understand authentic articles related to daily life, culture, or society targeted at native Chinese speakers
R4: read and understand professional articles on specific topics
W1: write short essays using Chinese characters to express opinions on familiar topics
W2: write essays using Chinese characters to express opinions on selected professional topics
W3: use Chinese characters to carry out selected formal writing tasks, such as writing speeches, formal letters, research papers, etc.
