‘Hoi!’, ‘Hola!’, ‘Ciao!’, ‘Bonjour!’ Do you still remember the first word you learned in a new language?

CUHK students going on exchange in the next academic year are getting ready for their journey. To facilitate their preparation, the Office of Academic Links arranged a series of survival language courses including Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean and Spanish to encourage students to pick up some local phrases prior to their departure.

During these intensive courses, students began by learning the basics, from babbling their first words of the local language to counting numbers, greeting friends, and introducing themselves. The instructors also shared tips on living like a local, understanding the slangs, and respecting the hierarchical interpersonal relationship in places such as Japan and Korea.

By learning the languages, students will be able to better navigate the customs and traditions of their host countries, which will enhance their exchange experience. Let’s send our blessings to all our outgoing exchange students for a fruitful journey abroad!
