GlobaLinks December 2023 (Issue 58)

Passports stamped with memories

The Office of Academic Links said goodbye to over 300 exchange students who have called our campus home for the past few months. Two incoming exchange students shared their time at CUHK.

Anthony Edward Martinez, an exchange student from Colorado Mesa University in the USA, shared how the journey has helped his personal growth. ‘I encountered challenges at the beginning, from course registration to navigating such a large campus. However, I saw these obstacles as opportunities for adaptation and learning about the world. I have explored a number of countries in the region and experienced cultures different from my own. Most importantly, I have developed friendships that will last a lifetime. This experience will stay with me forever.’

Sophie Raimondo Schmid from Utrecht University in the Netherlands chose CUHK as her study destination for its academic excellence and cultural diversity. ‘Culturally and socially, the exchange journey has opened doors to a rich tapestry of experiences. Meeting people from Hong Kong and around the globe has made my stay truly incredible. Participation in various activities, from the vibrant Fire Dragon Dance, Kung Fu class, Chinese painting sessions to island hopping and hiking, has added vibrant strokes to my cultural canvas. Navigating a fast-paced city has taught me the value of balance–recognising the importance of rest amid the hustle.’

Exchange programmes play a vital role in CUHK’s cultural promotion work. The Office of Academic Links looks forward to welcoming more students from all corners of the globe in the upcoming year.
