Tony Tam is a Professor in the Department of Sociology. In 1990 he obtained a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago and became an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Harvard University. In 1995 he joined the Institute of European and American Studies at Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He took up the current position in December 2008. Research: Dr Tam’s main research interests are in education, stratification, health inequality, the labour market and economic sociology. His early works are represented by his 1997 and 2000 AJS articles on gender inequality that debunk a deeply entrenched scholarly consensus, often referred to as the cultural devaluation of women’s work. Before joining CUHK, he was co-PI of the Taiwan Education Panel Survey (TEPS) – the most significant and most gratifying project of his career. The TEPS was the first national public-use data project, consisting of four waves of comprehensive surveys and testing of two cohorts of about 60,000 high school students, their classmates, parents, teachers and schools. The TEPS has significantly expanded the basis of social science research on education in Taiwan, offering a free and exceptionally rich data resource for years to come. Because of its comprehensive contents, the data set is a goldmine for basic research on the sociology of education, adolescence, family, health, deviance, civic behaviour and so forth. His most recent publications have concentrated on educational and health inequality. His recent projects include the use of vignettes and large-scale biosocial surveys, extension of the surging literature on non-cognitive skills and the role of subjective well-being in health. He is also co-investigator of the new China Education Panel Survey (CEPS). Professional Services: For more than two decades Dr Tam has served as a reviewer for the AJS and ASR and as an editorial board member of leading journals (e.g., two terms for the AJS and three terms for Sociology of Education). He currently serves on the governing board of Research Committee 28 on Stratification and Mobility Research within the International Sociological Association, the advisory boards of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) and China Labour-force Dynamics Survey (CLDS), the Global Advisory Program of Brain Korea 21 PLUS (a flagship national initiative in building world-class research universities in South Korea) and the Social Science Panel of the Research Grants Council (the Hong Kong equivalent of the NSF in the US). Mentoring: In the past six years, six MPhil students and two PhD students have completed their theses under Dr Tam’s supervision (including one minor co-supervision). He has also supervised four winners of the prestigious UGC PhD Fellowship, two of whom were his MPhil students.
