In a modern and knowledge-based society like Hong Kong, there is a rapidly growing demand for postgraduate training that can facilitate life-long self-improvement and career development through strengthening one’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and broadening one’s perspectives and knowledge base.
Against this backdrop, the present programme is designed to respond to the demand by introducing various sociological perspectives and applying them in the analysis of a wide range of social phenomena, covering topics such as individual and society, society and culture, and the social impact of technological and environmental changes.
Established since the early 1960’s, our Department of Sociology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the oldest and largest sociology department in Hong Kong. Throughout the past forty years, our Department has played a leading role in the teaching of sociology and conducting of social research in the community. Against the backdrop of Hong Kong becoming a modern and knowledge-based society, our taught Master’s degree programme (M.A. in Sociology), first offered in 2005-06 with both full-time and part-time modes, is specifically designed to meet the growing demand for postgraduate training in the society. The major objective of the programme is to facilitate life-long self-improvement and career development through strengthening students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills and broadening their perspectives and knowledge base.
Sociology is a rigorous and systematic study of social interaction and social life. Students will be guided to take a fresh look at how personal experiences of individuals may actually be patterned by wider social and structural forces. Sociologists like to look beyond common sense to unveil the hidden assumptions and inherent contradictions in social institutions and social policies. Through our Master’s programme, students will be introduced to a variety of penetrating and yet competing perspectives for the analysis of social phenomena, which are particularly useful in the present rapidly changing society. In addition to taking students through an exciting and eye-opening intellectual journey, our programme will also equip them with practical social research knowledge and skills.
In the past years, our programme has attracted a large number of students who come from a diversity of professions, including teaching and education administration, media reporting and production, human resources and management, and social services. Our Department welcomes you to join our programme and enjoy the experience of high quality teaching offered by our accomplished faculty members in a well-equipped and friendly learning environment.
