Issue
According to Hong Kong’s 2018 report card, there were only 30% of children achieved international norms for cardio-respiratory fitness, while less than 10% of children participated in at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) a day. On the other hand, academic achievements have been more valued in our education system over other achievements, especially physical activity. There is a lack of standardized, comprehensive, and well-developed physical fitness, physical literacy, and sports talent identification program and assessment in Hong Kong, which are the keys to give the opportunity for children and youth to have a healthier lifestyle and excel in sports performance.
Solution
PLACY provides physical literacy, physical fitness, and sports talent assessments, certifications, awards, ranking, and consultation and referral services for children and youth in Hong Kong, regardless of their physical abilities, cultural and socio-economic background. The assessments provide objective and quantifiable measurements for the participants to realize their health conditions and enhance their own sports performance and techniques. The awards and ranking system, meanwhile, exists to motivate individuals to be more physically active, literate, and participate in sports activities while enabling relevant organizations to have greater insight for identifying talented individuals. With the objective and quantifiable assessment results, PLACY will also serve as the platform to provide referral and connection to various sports associations for further development of the talented individuals’ potential in different sports, and guide students to participate in continuous exercise and assessment, in order to help the government and/or various institutions to track talented individuals.
Impact
Through PLACY programmes, younger generations can have an earlier realization of their health conditions and enhance their awareness of the importance of sports in individuals’ lives. Assessment results may also be set as sports talent identification (STI) for the possible selection of promising athletes with the goal of systematically maximizing their potential. Our programmes are more accessible to disadvantaged groups, thus increasing the pool of potential elite athletes in Hong Kong.
Beneficiaries

  • Children and youths (aged 5-18)

  • Ethnic minority families and their children

  • Low-income families and their children

  • Special Educational Needs (SEN) students

  • Family members of the children and youths

  • School teachers

  • Sports coaches
