Event Highlight | 48th International Exhibition of Invention Geneva (26 - 30 April 2023)

The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) triumphed at the 48th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, winning a total of 26 awards, including two special grand prizes the Prize of the International Federation of Inventors’ Association – IFIA Award and Prize of Saudi Arabian Delegation. This demonstrating the University’s excellence in research and innovation on the global stage.

Research teams from Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Science, and Faculty of Medicine garnered 2 special grand prizes, 6 Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury, 2 Gold Medals, 11 Silver Medals and 7 Bronze Medals with their innovations in the event. In fact, CUHK teams won the highest number of the prestigious Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury among Hong Kong delegations at this year’s Expo.

Among the 26 projects, 8 of them were developed under the world-class InnoHK research centres led by CUHK, which collaborate with top research institutions around the world. Another 9 projects have been commercialised through university-supported start-up companies led by CUHK researchers or become successful social enterprises.

This invention is a novel long-acting anti-obesity and insulin-sensitizing drug for safe and effective treatment and prevention of multiple metabolic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver and obesity. 

 

 

Prize of Saudi Arabian Delegation and a Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury

This novel artificial muscle has the highest power, efficiency, and wearing comfort, providing assistance for shoulder, elbow, wrist, and leg of stroke or spinal cord injury patient. The highly compact configuration also could be deployed in cramped industrial applications. With highly automated manufacturing methods, the muscle is ready for mass production. 

 

 

Gold Medal with the Congratulations of the Jury

This invention is a gut microbiome-based AI model that can screen for the risk of eight human diseases, including colorectal cancer and Crohn’s disease.

This invention is a miniature, battery-free remote sensing system with an extended detection period for real-time monitoring of GERD in a non-invasive, inexpensive fashion.

Precision Listening® brain technology is a short EEG test conducted on babies while they are sleeping to predict language developmental problems from infancy.

This invention uses supramolecular chemistry to achieve automated, quantitative 3D structural-molecular imaging in whole organs, laying the foundation for low- cost, accessible precision diagnostics and advanced research tools.

This invention is a soft robot that can navigate in tiny or tortuous lumens, perform various functions, and has great potential in minimally invasive endoluminal intervention.
 

ORKTSScalable Production of α-CsPbI3 Nanocrystals – a Promising Photovoltaic Material by Dr Lai Hei Ming of the Department of Psychiatry. (Photo: ORKTS)

α-CsPbI3 nanocrystal is the most promising raw material for LEDs and solar cells, but synthesis has required temperatures above 110°C and has not been scalable to above 5 ml. This enables industrial, 50 ml-scale synthesis at 20°C with similar quality.

In addition, two of CUHK startups (Depth Vision Ltd and Geniebiome Ltd), established under the Hong Kong Government's Technology Start-up Support Scheme (TSSSU) programme, also participated as exhibitors to achieve a remarkable 2 Golds Medals and 1 Silver Medal.

The International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva is the largest global exhibition devoted exclusively to inventions. All the exhibited inventions have been evaluated by an international jury of specialists. This year’s exhibition showcased over 1,000 inventions from 40 countries and regions.
