Hong Kong students’ level of scientific literacy is generally not high, and they have relatively little interest in scientific inquiry. Their motivation to inquire is also weak. Humanitarian values are often brushed aside in the teaching or learning of science and technology. Without the nourishment of humanitarian values, science and technology would be unrooted.  The exam-oriented tendency of Hong Kong’s education artificially carve the domain of knowledge into separate subjects, with little dialogue among them. As a result, it would be difficult for the students to tackle important global issues comprehensively from different angles. Many Hong Kong students lack in-depth knowledge about China and about the world, thus hampering their development of an international perspective.

Capitalizing on Professor Hon-Ming Lam’s 25 years of research, we use soybean as a case in point to demonstrate an integrated interdisciplinary approach to learning. We strive to empower and enable the schools.

Rooted in science but transcending science, Soyvestors’ integrated inter-disciplinary STEAM education approach delves also into aspects normally covered in Geography, Economics, History, Cultural Studies, and even Domestic Science. In partnership with teachers, we aim at nurturing our younger generation so that their horizons will be broadened, and their ability to understand, analyze and consider important global issues from different vantage points improved. These all-rounded talents will surely be important assets to our community and will contribute to energize our society.
