Matt Cheung practised in leading law firms in London and Auckland, New Zealand, before returning to Hong Kong in 2008. In his 7 years of practice, he was primarily a banking and finance litigator specialising in civil fraud. He also practised in other areas, including administrative law, intellectual property, information technology and international trade.
Matt also has considerable teaching experience. He was a part-time tutor of Legal Theory and Jurisprudence at the University of Auckland. He also taught for 3 years at the College of Law (now the University of Law) in Moorgate, London. The subjects he taught there include Civil and Criminal Litigation, Business, Commercial Dispute Resolution, Banking and Debt Finance, and Legal Writing and Drafting. At the College of Law he was the Associate Director of Design for Linklaters LLP’s London office. In this role he designed the Civil Litigation Legal Practice Course and its examinations for the firm’s London office and taught many of its trainees.
At CUHK LAW, Matt is a recipient of the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. He teaches eight disciplines across the LLB, JD, LLM and PCLL. His subjects range from the most theoretical (such as Jurisprudence) to the substantive (for instance Contract and Civil Procedure) and to vocational disciplines (for instance Alternative Dispute Resolution and Trial Advocacy).
At CUHK Law Matt has served as Assistant Director of the PCLL Programme and then Programme Director of the Juris Doctor programme. He currently heads Alumni Affairs.
