2015
Thomson Reuters has ranked The Chinese University of Hong Kong as the 8th most impactful research institution in the area of telecommunications (a primary research area of Information Engineering Department) during the period 2004-2014. The Chinese University of Hong Kong is the only Asian institution featured on this list.

2012
Launched the BSc Programme in Mathematics and Information Engineering which is an interdisciplinary Programme aimed to nurture and educate mathematically–trained engineers and researchers for the information world of today and tomorrow. (For students admitted under the 4-year cohort)
2010
Prof. Bob Li and Prof. Raymond Yeung, co-founders of the field of network coding, established the Institute of Network Coding in CUHK under the an Areas of Excellence (AoE) Scheme funded by the University Grants Committee. The total budget exceeds $100M.
2007
Launched the Double Degree Programme in Mathematics and Information Engineering, and Integrated BBA/Integrated BBA and Information Engineering.
Received University’s strategic funding support under the area of Information Science, which has been identified as one of the five major areas of development in the scheme of Focused Investments.
2006
Cooperated with Mathematics Department to establish the Double Degree Programme in Mathematics and Information Engineering.
2005
Established the Center for Internet II Technologies and Applications, demonstrating the latest applications and network security technologies.
2003
Established the Center for Advanced Research in Photonics under Faculty of Engineering.
Established MobiTeC (Mobile Technologies Center) to lead the R&D for mobile industries in Hong Kong.
2002
Established the Photonics Packaging Laboratories to lead research on photonics packaging technologies in collaboration with The Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
2000
Developed the Hong Kong Education City in collaboration with the Education Department of Hong Kong.
1999
Established the Area of Excellence in Information Technology (AoE-in-IT) in Hong Kong in collaboration with HKU and HKUST.
Launched the Information Technology Entrepreneur Programme (ITEP) to help young people to start technology business.
1996
Led the first ATM network testbed connecting CUHK, HKUST, and HKU for collaborative R&D in high-speed networking.
Established Hong Kong School Net to bring Internet to primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong. School Net later developed the Hong Kong Cyber Campus (hkcampus.net), linking all universities and schools in Hong Kong, and received an IT Application Award in 1998.
1995
Set up the Electronic News Media and Publishing Consortium (ENMPC) to develop local media and publishing industries into electronic information providers.
1993
Developed the first medical imaging network (MAGNET) system in South-East Asia, connecting hospitals with optical fibers for image transmission and remote diagnosis applications.
1991
Set up the first Internet connection in Hong Kong – a 64 kbps link to the NASA Ames Laboratory in U.S. CUHK later became the center of Hong Kong Internet Exchange (HKIX) – the hub linking all ISPs in Hong Kong.
1989
Established as the first Information Engineering (IE) department in Hong Kong offering BEng, MPhil, and PhD programmes. The BEng programme was the first IE programme receiving a five-year full accreditation by HKIE in 1995.
