SEZs Data and Research Unit Received Support The Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre has recently donated a sum of HK$70,000 to the University in support of the activities of the Special Economic Zones (SEZs) Data and Research Unit of the University's Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies (CCAS) for 1988. The SEZs Data and Research Unit was established in 1985 with an initial grant of HK$ 110,000 from the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. The Unit aims at providing information on certain aspects of the SEZs for access of researchers within and without the University. The Unit also serves to promote understanding of the SEZs, to facilitate academic communication among scholars in the field and to organize researches on the SEZs. The research fund of the Unit of 1986 and 1987 totalling HK$110,000 was also donated by the Beijing-Hong Kong Academic Exchange Centre. University Members Honoured * Mr. William Cheng, Senior Lecturer in Education, has been selected a recipient of the American Biographical Institute's 1987 Commemorative Medal of Honor. The names of all recipients of the Medal will be listed in the forepart of all future biographical works published by the Institute, copies of which are distributed on a worldwide basis. * Dr. Teresa Lee Au, Resident Physician of University Health Service , has been admitted to the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem as Serving Sister by the Queen. She was presented the insignia by His Excellency the Governor on 9th November, 1987. University Members Serve on Outside Committees (1) The following members of the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards/committees: * Professor Stuart P. Donnan, Professor of Community Medicine, has been appointed to serve on the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health for three years, effective 1st October, 1987. * Dr. Agnes Ng, Senior Lecturer in Social Work, has been reappointed a member of the Advisory Committee on Social Work Training for two years, effective 1st November, 1987. * Professor John Gardiner, Professor of Pharmacology, has been appointed a member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Appeal Tribunal for one year, effective 1st December, 1987. * Dr. Chan Kai-Ming, Senior Lecturer in Orthopaedic and Traumatic Surgery, has been appointed a member of the Council for Recreation and Sport for one year, effective 29th November, 1987. (2) The following members have been nominated to represent the University on outside committees: * Professor Stuart P. Donnan of the Department of Community Medicine and Dr. Woo Kam-sang, Senior Lecturer in Medicine, on the Expert Group on Extended Training for Ambulancemen under the Ambulance Services Review Steering Group of the Hong Kong Government. * Dr. Chiu Kam-wai, Reader in Biology, Dr. Kuan Hsin-chi, Reader in Government and Public Administration, and Dr. Mark Lindley, Lecturer in Music, on the Selection Board for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Scholarships. * Mr. David A. Gilkes, Bursar of the University, and Miss Linda Hu, Senior Assistant Registrar, Academic and Examination Section, Registry, on the Working Party on Performance Indicators. * Dr. Yum Tak-shing, Lecturer in Electronics, on the Hong Kong Productivity Council. New Members of Appointments Board The following have accepted the Vice- Chancellor's invitation to serve on the Appointments Board for a term until 31st July, 1989: —Mr. Andrew O.K. Chow, Managing Director of Tian An Development Co. Ltd. —Mr. Lyn Edinger , Chief, Foreign Commercial Service, American Consulate General, Hong Kong —Mr. Herman Liu, Group Administration Manager, Jebsen and Co. Ltd. —Mr. Yao Kang, Director of Swire Group —D r. M.T. Geoffrey Yeh, Managing Director of Hsin Chong Holdings (HK) Ltd. Vice-Chancellor 's Cup The 1987 Vice-Chancellor's Cup Staff Sports Tournament concluded on 22nd November. The Science Team gained the highest accumulated points in the Tournament's five events and captured the overall championship. The Team now keeps the Cup permanently, having won the title for the third consecutive year. The Administration Team emerged as the first runner-up overall this year.
