Professorial In au gu ra l Lecture Prof. Patrick Y. D. Wong, professor of physi ology, delivered his inaugural lecture on The Chal lenge of Male Contraception' on 31st May 1991. Prof. Wong described the various new methods and approaches o f male contraception, explaining their underlying principles and pointing out the merits and side effects o f each. Prof. Wong believes that new technological advancements have made possible in- depth study o f human reproduction, and i f male con traception is given the priority it deserves, a 'male p ill' w ill very soon emerge. New Course on Foreign Exchange Practices The BBA Degree Programme o f the Faculty of Business Administration has introduced a new course entitled 'Foreign Exchange Practices'. Designed by the business faculty in conjunction w ith government officials and leading experts o f foreign exchange in the private sector, the course is the first of its kind in the territory. The main objective is to familiarize fourth-year students concentrating in business administration with the knowledge and techniques o f foreign exchange operations, w ith a special emphasis on the Hong Kong situation. Those who teach the course have a ll been involved in course design. They include academics from the Faculty o f Business Administration as well as directors, chief executives and managers o f local banks and financial companies. Prof. Mun Kin-chok, dean o f the Faculty of Business Administration, is the course coordinator. Course contents include theory o f monetary management o f the banks in Western countries; the Hong Kong monetary framework; the Hong Kong dollar interbank and paper market; corporate dealing; treasury risk management; financial management; money market; the exchange rate system and the foreign exchange market; exchange rate determination and forecasting; the spot market and the forward market; and trading games. Professorial Appointments The University has appointed the follow ing new professors: Professor o f Accountancy Prof. Ferdinand Akthar Gul has been appointed pro fessor o f accountancy from 19th June 1991. Prof. Gul received his BA degree from the University of Malaya in 1968, his M. Com. degree from the University of Liverpool, UK in 1975 and his Ph.D. degree from the Uni versity o f New England, Australia in 1981. Between 1981 and 1990, he held teaching posts in the de partments o f accountancy in various universities in Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand. Prof. Gul has acquired professional qualifications in various countries, including Public Accountant in Malaysia, and Certified Practising Accountant and Associate o f the Australian Society o f Accountants in Australia. He is also a fellow o f the Institute o f Cost and Management Accountants in the UK. Professor o f Information Engineering P ro f. Omar W in g has been appointed professor of information engineering from 15th July 1991. A fte r g raduating w ith a BS degree from the U n i versity o f Tennessee in the USA in 1950, Prof. Wing pur sued fu rthe r studies at the Massachusetts In s titu te o f Technology and obtained an MS degree in 1952. He completed his doctoral studies at Columbia University and was awarded Eng.Sc.D. in 1959. Thereafter he taught in the Department of Electrical engineering of Columbia University for some 30 years and was promoted to professor in 1969.
