International Conference on Cu l t u r al Criticism 1993 (27th December 1992-10th January 1993) The two-week conference drew together 40 overseas participants and 70 local scholars. Its general theme was public spheres and public cultures, and major topics were culture, mode r n i ty and democracy i n comparative perspectives; cross-cultural negotiations; images and boundaries; cultural criticism and the public sphere; mode r n i t y, i den t i ty and cu l t u r al ambivalence; and politics of cultural criticism. Overseas participants included such famous names as Charles Taylor, Richard Rorty, Virginia Dominguez, Vincent Crapanzano, Jane Kramer, Leo Ou-fan Lee, Benjamin Lee, Helen Siu, Susan Introducing the Research Institute for the Humanities 4
