T h r o u g h d a i l y c o n t a c t , h o m e v i s i t s , s em i n a r s , f i e l d o b s e r v a t i o n s, s y m p o s i u m s , j o i nt research a n d o t h e r activities, t h ey w e r e exposed to the cultural characteristics of different societies a n d acquired valuable k n o w l e d ge a nd experience i n administrative ma n a g eme n t . T h e p r o g r a mme w as j o i n t ly o r g a n i z e d b y the U n i v e r s i ty a n d the K o w l o o n C h amb e r of C omme r c e w h i c h sponsors its expenses f o r t w o y e a r s , a m o u n t i n g t o HK$ 1 , 0 2 0 , 0 0 0. T h e d i s t i n g u i s h i ng characteristic o f the p r o g r amm e is the b r i n g i ng together of the c r e am of the ma i n l a n d ' s u n i v e r s i t y students, i n c l u d i ng those f r o m e t h n ic m i n o r i t y areas, f or p u r p o s es of t r a i n i n g w i t h the best of the Un i v e r s i t y ' s students. D u r i n g their stay i n H o n g K o n g, the m a i n l a nd students we r e each received b y a H o n g K o n g s t u d e nt w h o s e r v ed as h i s / h e r host. T he teachers of t h e p r o g r a m m e w e r e d r a w n f r o m staf f of t h e Un i v e r s i t y, memb e rs of the K o w l o o n Ch amb e r of C omme r ce a nd other leaders i n commerce a nd i n d u s t r y , and representatives f r o m consulates a n d c u l t u r a l o r g a n i z a t i o n s. T h e y g a ve the students a n o v e r v i ew of H o n g K o n g a n d i n t r o d u c e d t h em t o the c u l t u r e of d i f f e r e nt c o u n t r i e s . T h e y also e x p l a i n e d th e characteristics of H o n g K o n g management u s i n g a cross-cultural approach. Outside the classroom, the students ma d e field trips to l e a rn a b o ut H o n g K o n g 's u r b a n p l a n n i n g , t r a n s p o r t a t i on n e t w o r k , a n d the operations o f the financial market. A t the o p e n i n g c e r emo n y of the p r o g r a mme h e l d o n 1st A u g u s t, Prof. A r t h u r K.C . L i, vice-chancellor of the University, said, ' O u r a i m is t o set t h e m o d e of a d m i n i s t r a t i on of the c o m i n g c e n t u r y a n d n u r t u r e , f o r the b e n e f i t of o u r c o u n t r y , m a n a g e m e nt elites w i t h a w o r l d v i s i o n a n d k n o w l e d g e of different cultures, w h o u n d e r s t a n d their c o u n t ry a n d society, a n d are a d e q u a t e ly e q u i p p ed w i t h m a n a g e r i al a n d s o c i a l science research skills.'
