26 Chinese University Bulletin No. 1, 2009 Stand and Walk Tall Convened by Prof. K.M. Chan, Professor of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, Faculty of Medicine, ‘StandTALL’ is a charitable organization aimed at providing quake vic tims with a comprehensive rehabilitation programme and training up medical staff in Sichuan. Since its inception, it has already served more than 1000 patients. Patients fitted with the prosthesis enjoy greater mobility. To lay down a comprehensive rehabilitation programme with oppor tunities for res earch and academic exchanges, Prof. Fok Tai-fai, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine o f CUHK , s i g n e d t he Agreement of Academic Exchange and Cooperation with Prof. Li Yuanfeng, president of the Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences and Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital, on 9 February 2009. The agreement shows the commitment of the Faculty of Medicine to rehabilitation services in Hong Kong and Sichuan. Among other members of the delegation led by Prof. Li Yuanfeng were three quake survivors supported by ‘StandTALL’. Dai Guohong and Gong Guilin are both teenaged bilateral amputees. During their visit to Hong Kong, they received state-of-the-art rehabilitation advice and medical treatment. Joint medical consultations we r e a l s o o r g a n i z e d b e t we e n t h e me d i c a l professionals in Hong Kong and Sichuan to fur ther enhance the treatment protocol. Three-year-old Song Xinyi gives her drawing to Prof. Fok Tai-fai. Xinyi is the youngest patient supported by ‘StandTALL’. She is probably one of the youngest amputees in the world. Having been fitted with a prosthesis, she can now climb up and down staircases. This shows the importance of early rehabilitation. ‘StandTALL’ will continue to take good care of her, helping her to make confident strides in life’s journey.
