In te rn a tion a l cooperation is the very breath o f life to us if we are to grow to a position o f respect among the universities o f the w o rld , and in recognition o f this, the Chinese U n iv e rs ity today confers upon C lark K e rr the honorary degree o f D o c to r o f Laws. T h e H o n . C . Y . K w a n T h e H onourable Kw a n Cho Y iu is a leading member o f the legal profession in H o n g K ong. He has practised as a so licito r fo r th irty years and was at one tim e President o f the L aw Society, V ice-P resident o f the S tanding M ili ta ry C o u rt d u rin g the M ilita ry A dm in istra tio n , and F irst M agistrate when the c iv il G overnm ent was reinstated after the Pacific W ar. He con tribu te d greatly to the im p rovem ent o f H o ng K on g 's legal system by serving on the C omm ittee on Chinese Law and Custom and the Law Reform Comm ittee. A t present he is a member o f the Executive and Legisla- tive Councils. He is interested in the welfare o f H o ng K o n g and is well known fo r his support o f many welfare projects. M r . Kw a n has played a direct role in the creation o f the Chinese U n iv e rs ity and has been the Chairm an o f the Preparatory C omm ittee and the Provisional C ouncil. H e is now Chairm an o f the Council, and has played a leading part in successfully conducting negotiations w ith the G overnm ent concerning the U n iv e rs ity site at M a L iu Shui, and in the de term ination o f m ajor policies. T h e U n iv e rs ity is proud to honour h im w ith the degree o f D o cto r o f Laws, honori s causa. T h e H o n . R . C . L e e T h e Honourab le R ichard Charles Lee completed his education at O x fo rd U n iv e rs ity where he received the degree o f M .A . Since re tu rn in g to H o ng K ong, he has been engaged in in d u s tria l and commercial enterprises, in c lu d in g banking and p u b lic u tilitie s, and has been active in the p rom o tio n o f overseas trade fo r the products o f H o ng Kong. He has represented H o ng K o n g in various inte rna tiona l conferences and trade fairs in Singapore, A ustralia, West Germ any and W est A frica . He is interested in the pu b lic welfare o f H o n g K o n g and served in various capacities in the p rom o tio n o f education, charity, sports and welfare projects. He is now a member o f the C o u rt and C o un cil o f the U n iv e rs ity o f H o ng Kong, L ife President o f the South China A th le tic Association and the Wanchai K a ifo ng W elfare Association. Because o f his pu b lic s p irit and able leadership, he was appointed a member o f the P ub lic Services Comm ission, the Legislative C ouncil, the Executive C oun cil, besides many Boards and Comm ittees. W hen the Chinese U n iv e rs ity was being established last year, M r . L ee served on the Provisional C oun cil and later the U n iv e rs ity C oun cil where he con tribu te d greatly to the creation o f ou r U n ive rsity. As the Senior Chinese Representative on the highest G overnm ent Councils o f H o ng K ong, he led the com m u n ity in sup po rting the fou n d in g o f the U n iv e rs ity . I t is most fittin g that we, in appreciation o f his w o rk confer on him the honorary degree o f D o c to r o f Laws, ho nori s causa. 7
