New Faculty Deans The following academics have been elected/re-elected dean of various faculties for a term of three years: • Dr. Fanny Cheung as dean of the Faculty of Social Science from 1st August 1995. • Prof. Arthur K.C. L i as dean of Faculty of Medicine from 1st July 1995 (re-elected). • Dr. H.H. Ho as dean of Faculty of Arts from 1st August 1995 (re-elected). New Appointments to UC Board of Trustees The United College Board of Trustees recently elected Mr. Shum Choi-sang as chairman of the board. He succeeds Dr. Ho Tim who was elected permanent member. Dr. Thomas H.C. Cheung was elected vice- chairman of the board, succeeding Mr. Shum Choi- sang. Dr. Ho's long association with United College dates back to 1964 when he became a member of the college board. He was elected board chairman in 1991. Mr. Shum joined the college's board of trustees in 1963 and was elected vice-chairman in 1991. Dr. Cheung became a board trustee in 1978. He is also the president of the Alumni Association of United College and a member of the University Council. New Academic Programmes The University has launched the following new programmes from 1995-96: • Master o f Public Health Programme; • Master of Science Programme in Computer Science; • Certificate Programme in Chinese Computing offered by the School of Continuing Studies; • Certificate Course in China Marketing offered by the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business; • Certificate Course in Obstetric and Mi dw i f e ry Ultrasound offered by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Lectures Wei Lun Lectures • Prof. Mark Rosenzweig, professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania and a fellow of the Econometric Society, delivered a lecture entitled 'WhyAre Returns to Schooling High?' on 12th April 1995. • Prof. Richard E. Nisbett, Theodore M. Newcomb Distinguished University Professor of Psychology from the University of Michigan, presented a public lecture on 'Rules for Reasoning' on 8th September 1995. • Prof. Shun-ichi Amari, professor of mathematical engineering and information physics, University of Tokyo, spoke on 'Computer and the Brain' on 18th September 1995. Professorial Inaugural Lecture • Prof. JeanWoo, professor of medicine, delivered her inaugural lecture entitled 'The Quest for Longevity' on 9th June 1995. Conferences/Symposia/Workshops • The University's Faculty of Education and the Hong Kong Primary Education Research Association jointly organized a conference on primary education on 14th April 1995. • The University's Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies, the Department of Sociology of the Hong Kong University, and the Department of Applied Social Studies of the Polytechnic University of Hong Kong jointly organized a conference on Chinese societies and social indicators studies from 27th to 29th April 1995. • The Department of Sports Science and Physical Education and the Guangzhou Institute of Physical Education j o i n t ly organized an international symposium on 'The Management of Youth Sport: Strategies for Asia' from 11th to 13th May 1995. • Chung Chi College coorganized the f o l l ow i ng conferences and workshop: - The 1995 gender role workshop on 'Women and Health', coorganized with the Gender Research Programme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia- Pacific Studies on 20th May 1995. - An 'International Symposium on Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems and Global Position Systems in Sustainable Development and Environmental Monitoring', cosponsored with the Department of Geography and the Association of Chinese Professionals of GIS Abroad from 25th to 28th May 1995. - The inaugural conference of the Asian Association o f Social Psychology, cosponsored w i th the Department of Psychology from 21st to 23rd June 1995. • The Department of Information Engineering and the Network Service Department of the Hong Kong Joint School Electronics and Computer Society jointly News in Brief 30
