The seminar was jointly organized with the Department of History. - ' T h e sovereign - tributary relationship among China, Korea and Ryukyu Islands during the Ching Dynasty' by Professor Chang Tsun-wu, Research Fellow of the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica, Taiwan, on 18th November. —'On the Sino-Russian literary relation and my recent trip to the USSR' by Professor Ge Baoquan, Senior Research Fellow of the Institute of Foreign Literature , The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, on 23rd November. —‘Sea Traffic in ancient China' by Professor Chang Yi, Institute of Chinese History, Academy of Social Sciences, Sichuan Province, on 8th December. —‘Some problems relating to the study of modern Chinese history' conducted by Professor Tang Zhi-jun, Institute of History, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, on 15th December. The seminar was jointly organized with the Department of History. * The Art Gallery organized a lecture on Tainting of representation of famous Buddhist images from Dunhuang' by Professor Roderick Whitfield, Professor of Chinese and Asian Art of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, on 3rd November. * The Departments o f Chemistry and Biochemistry jointly organized a seminar on 'Applications of NMR in biochemistry and biology' conducted by Professor A.I. Scott of the Department of Chemistry, Texas A. & M. University, on 4th November. * The Department of Chemistry organized the following seminars: —'Cobalt-mediated total synthesis of natural and unnatural products' conducted by Professor K.P.C. Vollhardt of the University of California at Berkeley, on 6th November. —‘New synthetic reactions catalyzed by palladium complexes' conducted by Professor Jiro Tsuji, Professor of Chemistry, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, on 18th December. * The Faculty o f Business Administration organized a seminar on ‘Managing nuclear power plants: issues in the design of high reliability in high consequence organization' conducted by Professor Arie Lewin, Professor of Organizational Studies of the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, USA, on 11th November. * The China's Special Economic Zones (SEZs) Data and Research Unit of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies organized a one-day seminar on 'The investment environment and foreign investment in China's SEZs and the economic relations between the SEZs and Hong Kong' on 12th November. The major speakers of the seminar were Professor Ji Chong-wei, Standing Committee Member of the Technological Economics Study Centre of the State Council, Mr. Mao Di-sheng, Deputy Mayor of Xiamen Municipality, Mr. Liu-feng, Director and Mr.LinQidong, Deputy Secretary of the Shantou Special Economic Zone Administrative Committee. * The Chinese Law Programme of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies organized a seminar on 'The legal status of Hong Kong residents in mainland China' by Professor Yao Zhuang of the Foreign Affairs Institute, Beijing, and Chinese expert of the Sub-group of Experts, the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group, on 28th November. * The Department of Journalism and Communication and the Goethe Institute jointly organized a seminar on 'Electronic journalism: experience in Germany, Hong Kong and the United States' on 28th November. * The Department of Chinese organized a lecture on 'The subject matter of drama and its classification' by Mr. Chung King Fai, Dean of Drama, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, on 30th November. * The Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies and the Department of Government and Public Administration jointly organized a lecture on ‘Japan and ASEAN' by Mr. Guo Zhaolie, Associate Director, Shanghai Institute for International Studies, on 30th November. * The Department of Physics organized a seminar on 'Room temperature tunable solid state lasers' conducted by Dr. S.T. Lai, Senior Research Physicist, Allied-signal Inc., USA, on 4th December. * The University Health Service organized a seminar on ‘Legal implications i n the medical/nursing profession' conducted by Mr. Simon Scriven, a solicitor, on 8th December. 19
