Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor G.H. Choa, Professor o f Administrative Medicine, has been appointed Acting Pro-Vice- Chancellor from 1st July to 31st December, 1987. First Successful Birth by In Vitro Fertilization The Departments o f Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Anatomy announced the birth o f a baby boy on 18th August at the Prince o f Wales Hospital following treatment by in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer. The boy, weighing three kilograms and in good health, was born to a twenty-nine years old woman. Altogether eighty-two women were treated by IVF since December 1986 , which resulted in another eight successful pregnancies, o f which six are still ongoing. The IVF team consists o f clinicians, em bryologists, technicians and nursing personnel o f the University and the Prince o f Wales Hospital. The Departments o f Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Anatomy have been generously supported by col leagues in the Department o f Chemical Pathology and the Lee Hysan Clinical Sciences Laboratory as well as other Government doctors and nurses in the Hospital. The University also announced asuccessful preg nancy from the procedure o f gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) which is an alternative treatment to IVF applicable to women w ith at least one patent fallopian tube. In all IVF and GIFT procedures performed in the University programme, no donor eggs, sperms or embryos were employed. Accounting Courses Gain Further Professional Recog nition The Council o f the Hong Kong Society of Accountants has recently approved the granting o f exemption from papers 2.5B Organization and Management and 2.5C Managerial Economics in the HKSA/ACCA Joint Examination Scheme to CUHK graduates w ith University's passesin the corresponding qualifying internal courses. Graduates o f the University may now be exempted from a total o f ten papers in the jo in t examination. Dating and Authentication Service o f Ancient Ceramics The Yeung Shui Sang Laboratory for Thermoluminescence o f Ancient Ceramics began on 13th October to provide service on the dating and authentication o f ancient ceramics to the public w ith certification, issued in the name o f 'Yeung Shui Sang Laboratory for Thermoluminescence o f Ancient Ceramics, The Chinese University o f Hong Kong'. The Laboratory, a research centre established in 1986 , is located in the Science Centre. Swaine (ex-officio) Secretary Miss Wilma Toong Government Supports CAD/CAM Development The two local universities have recently received a grant o f $4.2 m illion from the Government to launch a Coordinated Development Programme on Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manu facture (CAD/CAM) Technology.
