Professor Qian Wei-chang, 1984/85 Siu Lien Ling Wong Visiting Fellow of Chung Chi College Education in the Next Century', and a panel of three speakers — Professor Qian Wei-chang, Professor Chan Shu-Park, President o f China Experimental University and Dr. John Chen, President of Lingnan College — addressed the Conference. I n conjunction with the Conference, an Exhibition on Books on Higher Education was mounted by the Chung Chi College library from 10th to 26th January. * Mr. Joel Thoraval, Visiting Scholar of the Department of Philosophy, gave a second talk on ‘What is so French in French Philosophy? — Michel Foucault and/in Contemporary Philosophy' on 14th January. The lecture was organized by the Department of Philosophy. * The Centre for Hong Kong Studies presented: - A lecture on ‘A Study of the Leisure Activities of the Youth in Guangzhou' by Mr. Wu Junjie, Chairman of the Guangzhou Youth Research Society and another on ‘The Influence from Foreign Culture and the Change of Guangzhou Youth's Value Concept' by Mr. Yu Yonjin, Vice-Chairman of the Society on 15th January. —A public lecture on ‘Media Use and Opinion Survey for 1997 Issue' by Professor L. Erwin Atwood, Deputy Director, School of Journalism, Southern Illinois University on 18th January. * Dr. J.Q. Fang, Department of Mathematics, Beijing Medical College, spoke on 'Multistate Survival Analysis with Time-dependent Covariates and Censoring' on 22nd January. The seminar was organized by the Department of Statistics. * Professor Hu Shouwei, Vice-President and Professor of History of Zhongshan University, Guangzhou gave a public lecture entitled ‘On Professor Chen Yinque's Contributions to the Study of Classical Chinese Literature' on 23rd January. The lecture was organized by the Department of History. * Mr. Zenqi o f the Anthropology Department, Zhongshan University, Guangzhou spoke on ‘Chinese Neolithic Culture' on 25th January. The seminar was jointly organized by the Institute of Chinese Studies and the Department of Anthropology. * The Departments of Biochemistry and Biology jointly presented a public lecture on ‘Biotechnology —a New Engineering Science?' by Professor B.S. Hartley on 26th January. Professor Hartley is a Fellow of the Royal Society and Professor of Biochemistry at the Imperial College in London. He was on a two-month visit to the University as the Kan Tong-Po/Royal Society Visiting Professor to advise on the developmen t of a biotechnology programme in Hong Kong. * Professor Feng Xianming, Honorary Professor of the University and Research Fellow and Deputy Director of the Research Unit, PalaceMuseum, Beijing spoke on 'Recent Discoveries of Importan t Chinese Pottery and Porcelain' on 29th January. The seminar was organized by the Institute of Chinese Studies. * The Department of Psychiatry presented the following seminar/lecture by Professor Ranan Hilel Rimon of the Department of Psychiatry, University of Helsinki, Finland: — A seminar on ‘Psychosomatic Aspects of Rheumatoid Arthritis' on 29th January. —A lecture on 'Monoamine Metabolites in the CSF of Patients with Schizophrenia' on 30th January. This lecture was organized in collaboration with the Hong Kong Society of Neurosciences. * The Department of Religion organized three public lectures by Dr. Frederick Sontag, Professor of Philosophy and Chairman of the Department of Philosophy, Pomona College, U.S.A.
