August, 1989 , he arrived at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and renewed the teaching career. Professor L i has been an active researcher in a wide range of technical fields. His works have been published in journals of communications, computers, system science, automatic control, probability,statistics, game theory, applied math US patents so far. His research work reflects the personal belief in bridging the gap between the abstract theory and the industrial application. He has frequently been invited to give international talks. His current research interests include, among other topics, the design of large gigahertz packet switches, the flow control and call set-up in broadband I SDN, and computerized communications in Chinese dialects. Aside from professional work and family life, Professor L i is fond of classical poetry, linguistics, history, and games. His special hobby has been in designing new educational toys for children of all ages. Mrs. Grace M.Y. C h ow Administrative Director, Office of Student Affairs Mrs. Grace Chow joined the University in 1973 and has since been i n v o l v ed i n student se r v i ces. She was i n s t r ume n t al i n the setting up of the Office of Student Affairs and its subsequent development. After graduation from this University, Mrs. Chow pursued higher studies on a scholarship in the United States, and later in the United Kingdom. Her training i n sociology, psychology and public and social administration has placed her in good stead in her present duties. Mrs. Chow has a brilliant record of extracurricular activities while a student at The Chinese University. She was an active member of the Drama Society, Rotaract Club, Foreign Languages Society and was the woman overall champion at the 1969 Intervarsity Athletic Meet. She also represented Hong Kong in the 1968 Far East Student Leader Pro- gramme sponsored by the American government. During her illustrious career in student work, she has made distinguished contributions to the development of student services in Hong Kong. She has published extensively on career education and student guidance, including Transition to the World of Work , Student Activities Handbook , Career Planning , How to Attend Interviews , Graduate Careers Handbook , Study Abroad , etc. She was elected chairman of the Hong Kong Student Services Association in 1988 and chaired the first Asia Pacific Conference on Student Affairs organized under the auspices of the same association. Among the many advisory committees Mrs. Chow has served on, she is presently chairman of the Review Sub-Committee of the Government Student Grant and Loan Scheme, and a member of the H KU and the CU Appointments Board. In 1986, she was also invited by the University of Shenzhen to advise on the setting up of a Career Advisory Service. Mrs. Chow's keen interest in research relating to graduate employment has made her an expert in the field. Her other research interests include gender-role studies and the relationship between education and social mobility. Dr. Michele M. Chan Lecturer, English Lan- guage Teaching Unit Dr. Michele Chan, an American, received her BFA in creative writing f r om B o w l i ng Green State University in 1978. After obtaining the post of instructor in composi- tion at Lansing Com- mu n i t y Co l l e g e, she went on for an M A (English) at Michigan State University and seriously embarked upon a career in teaching English composition. In 1982 Dr. Chan arrived in Hong Kong, her husband's birthplace, hoping to learn more about Chinese language and culture, as well as to pursue her career in English language teaching. Since joining the University in that year she has been a member first of the English Department and then the English Language Teaching Unit. To complement and enrich her teaching experience, she worked for a doctor of arts degree in English from the University of Michigan, which she completed in August 1989. During her period of service at the University Dr. Chan has been active in serving the needs of the students and furthering the work of the English Language Teaching Unit.
