— Professor Xu Pingfang, Deputy Director of the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, visited the College from 21st to 27th August and de livered a lecture on ‘Excavation in the Site of Dadu (Beijing), Capital of Yuan Dynasty' on 26th August. The lecture was jointly organized with the Department of History. — Professor Lin Wen-yueh, Professor of Chinese, National Taiwan University, visited the College on 29th September and gave a lecture on Translation on Classical literary Works'. The lecture was jointly organized with the Department of Translation and the Hong Kong Translation Society. — Professor Maurice Godelier, a well-known French anthropologist and Professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris, visited the College from 30th Septem ber to 31st October. During his stay, Pro fessor Godelier conducted aseries of seminars on 'The Evolution of Socio-economic Systems: Some Theoretical Problems' on 2nd, 9th, 16th, and 23rd October; gave a lecture on 'Marxist and Structuralist Ap proaches in Social Anthropology' on 19th October, and a slide talk on ‘Forms of Domination in Baruya Society' on 26th October. These seminars and lectures were jointly organized with the Department of Anthropology. — Professor Ben-Ami Shillony, Professor of History and Chairman of the Harry S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, visited the College from 4th to 11th October. He gave a lecture on ‘Who Is the Friend and Who Is the Foe? The Ambivalent Images of the US and China in Wartime Japan' on 6th October. This lecture was jointly organized with the Department of History. — Professor Karen Gloy, University of Lucerne, Switzerland, visited the College on 5th Octo ber and gave a lecture on 'Unity as the Main Problem of Philosophy'. The lecture was jointly organized with the Department of Philosophy. * The Department of Electronics organized a seminar on 18th September. Mr. W.Y. Ng, University Engineering Department, University of Cambridge, UK, spoke on 'Application of Multi-Objective Pro gramming to Control System Design'. * The Department of Music organized the following recitals and lectures: — A Chinese flute recital by Mr. Zheng Zheng- hua, a well-known flutist from China, on 17th September. — A lecture-recital on Cantonese music by Pro fessor Huang Jin Pei, Professor of Ethno- musicology, Xin Hai Music Conservatory, on 2nd October. — A public lecture on 'Mahler's Paradoxes' by Henri Louis de la Grange, a distinguished musicologist, on 5th October. The lecture was jointly presented with Consulat General de France. - A violin-piano recital by Mr. Ronald Woodcock and Professor David Gwilt, Pro fessor in Music, on 13th October. — Nan-kuan music lecture-demonstration and concerts by Han Tang Classic Music Institute, Taiwan, on 13th, 15th and 19th October. These activities were jointly organized with the Institute of Chinese Studies, with the assistance of Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. * An exhibition of ‘Modern Chinese Painting and Calligraphy from the Kau Chi Society of Chinese Art' was staged at the Art Gallery from 29th August to 4th October. The exhibition, jointly presented by the Art Gallery and the Kau Chi Society of Chinese Art, was formally opened by Dr. Ma Lin , the Vice-Chancellor, and Mr. Kwok Shu Po, Chairman of the Society, on 28th August, followed by a preview and reception. Featuring seventy-seven paintings and calligra phic works by thirty-five renowned artists who were active during the second half of the nineteenth cen tury to the present decade, the exhibition was high lighted by works of great masters such as Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Huang Binhong, Zhang Daqian and Li Keran. * The Bicentennial of the US Constitution Paper Show was held at the University lib ra ry from 14th to 30th September. The Paper Show was organized by the Univer sity Library System and co-sponsored by the United States Information Service, and was formally opened by Dr. Ma Lin . Featuring fifty paper panels explaining in detail the establishment and history of the American Con stitution, the Show consisted of three parts: (1) ante cedents leading to the framing of the Constitution; (2) principles embodied in the Constitution; and (3) the Living Constitution. 26
