English Language Teaching Unit A p a r t f r o m o r g a n i z i n g t h e E n g l i s h c o m p o n e n t o f the I n t e n s i ve P r o g r a mm e i n Putonghua, Cantonese a n d English, the E L T U o f f e r s f o u n d a t i o n c o u r s es t h a t f o c u s o n d e v e l o p i ng r e a d i n g, w r i t i n g, s p e a k i n g, a n d l i s t e n i n g a b i l i t i e s , a n d w o r k s c l o s e l y w i t h academic u n i t s to offer courses o n the use of English i n specialized areas. It also designs ESP courses w i t h academic departments t o cater for t h e d i s c i p l i n e - r e l a t ed l a n g u a ge n e e ds o f students. The E L TU aims not o n ly to i m p r o v e students' language skills b u t also to equip t h em w i t h c ommu n i c a t i o n strategies w h i c h they can use to c o n t i n u e their o w n language l e a r n i n g after graduation. Department of Chinese Language and Literature The d e p a r t me n t organizes th e Cantonese c o m p o n e n t o f the I n t e n s i v e P r o g r a mm e i n Putonghua, Cantonese a nd English , a nd offers elective Chinese language proficiency courses for students to take according to their interests a n d needs. I t also r u n s t a i l o r e d l a n g u a g e enhancement courses for specific faculties a n d supplies teaching staff for the Chinese section of the ILC. Independent Learning Centre The centre's English an d Chinese sections, set u p i n 1993 a nd 1994 respectively, boast a n impressive array of learning materials including films, satellite television programmes , multimedia c omp u t e r software, CD - R oms, a n d b o o k s f or learners t o use at their o w n initiative, time a n d pace, a nd i n a fashion that mos t suits t h em t o hone their reading, w r i t i n g, speaking, listening. a nd t h i n k i n g skills. Its Language Co u n s e l l i n g Service has l a n g u a g e counsellors w h o offer advice to help 'diagnose' a n d 'treat' language problems. New Asia Yale-in-China Chinese Language Centre The centre is responsible for the putonghua section of the Intensive Programme in Putonghua, Cantonese and English, and assists the constituent colleges i no r g a n i z i n g n o n - f o r m a l l a n g u a ge enhancement activities. It also offers Cantones e a n d p u t o n g h ua courses t o s t u d e n ts o f t h e International Asian Studies Programme, research scholars and academic staff f r om overseas, as well as staff of the University and their spouses. Diverse Undergraduate Language Programmes T he n u m b er of language-related undergraduate p r o g r a mm es o f f e r ed b y a c a d em i c d e p a r t me n t s has been o n the increase at the same time. Programmes introduced d u r i ng the last f i v e years i n c l u d e a major p r o g r a mm e i n translation, courses i n Spanish Studies, a B.Ed, p r o g r a m m e i n l a n g u a g e e d u c a t i o n , a n d a m i n o r p r o g r a mm e i n m o d e m languages a n d i n t e r c u l t u r al studies. These i n a d d i t i on to the existing p r o g r amme s i n Chinese language and literature, English, Japanese, as w e l l as French, German, a nd Italian studies offer a w i d e range of choices for students interested i n s t u d y i ng languages.
