The A r t M u s e um has a r e l a t i v e ly substantial collection of M i n g and Q i ng paintings, w h i c h is further enhanced by paintings of various artists and different schools w i t h generous donations f r om Bei Shan Ta ng i n r e c ent y ea r s. Some 70 paintings by M i n g and Q i ng artists have been selected to reveal the different styles of the time in this exhibition. • Yuan and M i n g Blue and White Ware f r om Jiangxi took place at the West-wing Gallery f r om 27th September to 2 4 th N o v e m b e r 2002. The e x h i b i t i on was jointly organized by the A r t M u s e um and the Jiangxi Provincial Museum. The best blue and white or underglaze blue wa re came f r om Jingdezhen, the ceramic capital of China. Scholarship i n the past was, and to some extent, still is centred upon the products f r om the official factories at the expense of provincial ware. This e x h i b i t i on addresses this issue by f o c u s i ng on the p r o v i n c i al b l u e - a n d- whites of the Yuan and M i n g dynasties. On display at this exhibition were 128 items of the Yuan and M i n g (late 14th- mid-17th centuries) periods produced in Jingdezhen. The e x h i b i t i on is f i n a n c ed by the Exhibition Revolving Fund of the Friends of the A r t Museum. • I n k p l ay i n M i c r o c o sm: Chinese Inside- painted Snuff Bottles 一 The Hump h r ey K.F. H u i Collection took place at the East-wing Gallery f r om 19th October 2002 to February 2003. Jar with figures, Chongzhen period (1628-1644), Ming Qingfeng (right) and Qiaoniang (left) (dated 1902) by Ye Zhongsan (1869-1945) On v i ew we re a r o u nd 160 inside- painted snuff bottles by renowned masters of the 19th and the early 20th centuries, including Gan Xuanwen, Zhou Leyuan, Ye Zhongsan, Ding Erzhong, and other minor artists. Graduation Exhibition of the Department of Fine Arts The g r adua t i ng class of Bachelor of A r ts in Fine A r t s 2002 p r e s en t ed t h e ir f i n al art projects in an exhibition held f r om 17th May to 23rd June 2002 at the West-wing Gallery of the A r t Museum. On display were Chinese painting, calligraphy, seal carving, Western painting, mixed media, and installation. En t i t l ed ' H a n dma d e ', the e x h i b i t i on demonstrated how hand-made processes can give rise to special tactile effects, and h ow such processes could facilitate the revelation of the character of an artist. Obituaries • Dr. the Hon. Sir Kenneth Ping-fan Fung, former Un i v e r s i ty Coun c il member and c h a i r man of the Bo a rd of Trustees of United College, passed away on 16th May 2002. • Dr. E d w i n Tao, C o u n c il memb er a nd former chairman of the Board of Trustees of N ew Asia College, passed away on 28th May 2002. 6 8 Chinese University Bulletin Autumn • Winter 2002
