Auspicious because Dr. Edgar Cheng , the new Chairman of the University Council, is presiding over it on his first day of office. Un i que it is because this may we ll be the on ly instance i n years to come that at a c ong r ega t i on, o ur U n i v e r s i ty confers degrees on just one class of graduates, the MB ChB winners.' P r o f. K i n g also p o i n t ed o u t t h at doctors graduating f r om local universities are n o w p e r m i t t ed to p r a c t i se provisionally for up to three years i n mainland hospitals and clinics, and that policies regarding medical practice are expected to be further liberalized w i t h the introduction of t he C l o s er E c o n om ic P a r t n e r s h ip Arrangement. He also quoted the example of Dr. Tse Yuen Man, a 1992 graduate who contracted SARS wh i le attending to her patients and eventually lost her life, and urged the graduates to learn from their role mo d e ls i n the Fa c u l ty of Me d i c i ne to become ‘true sons and daughters of Ho ng Kong and the pride of CUHK '.
