honorary member of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, and an Academician of the I n t e r n a t i o n al Eu r a s i an A c a d emy of Sciences. He was awa r d ed the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa, by the H o n g K o ng Un i v e r s i ty of Science and Technology i n 1999. He is a John S i mon Guggenheim Memo r i al Foundation Fellow and a Fellow of the Center for A d v a n c ed Study i n the Behavioral Sciences. He has served on the editorial boards of numerous p r o f e s s i onal j o u r n a l s, a nd a u t h o r ed or e d i t ed f i v e b o o ks a n d mo r e t h a n 160 articles for academic publications. Prof. Lau's accomplishments are we ll r ecogn i zed o n b o th sides of the T a i wan Strait. He is an honorary research fellow of the Shanghai Ac a d emy of Social Sciences and honorary professor of various tertiary institutions on the mainland. He is also an i n t e r n a t i o n al ad v i s er to the B u r e au of Statistics i n Ta i wan a nd a member of the board of directors of the Chiang Ching Kuo F o u n d a t i on f or I n t e r n a t i o n al Sc ho l a r ly Exchange, Taipei. Prof. L au has served as a consultant for ma n y international financial institutions s u c h as t he W o r l d B a n k , t he A s i a n De v e l o pme nt Bank, and nume r ous other public and private organizations. P r o f. L a u has b e en an a d v i s er a n d external examiner of the De p a r t me nt of Economics of The Chinese Un i v e r s i ty for ma n y years, a nd has v i s i t ed the C U H K c amp us ma n y times to g i ve talks i n its constituent colleges. As the recommended final candidate for vice-chancellorship, Prof. Lau met with undergraduate and postgraduate students in four open forums in early October 2003, and attended several discussion sessions to improve mutual understanding with representatives of the University's teachers' and staff associations, the alumni, the Senate, and the University's senior management team. On all those occasions, Prof. Lau shared his vision and aspirations with all concerned in a frank and candid manner, and expressed his views on major issues affecting the University's development.
