Dr. Edgar W.K. Cheng Succeeds Dr. Lee Hon-chiu as Council Chairman D r. Edgar W . K. C h e n g h a s b e e n a p p o i n t e d b y t he C h a n c e l l or of t he U n i v e r s i t y as t he new chairman of the Un i v e r s i ty Co u n c il f r om 24th Oc t ober 2003. D r . Edgar W . K. Cheng is an eminent leader i n the business a n d f i n a n c i a l s e c t or as w e l l as a n o u t s t a n d i ng o n c o l o g i s t. H e g r a d u a t ed f r om the Un i v e r s i ty of N o t re Dame a nd the M e d i c al Co l l e ge of W i s c o n s in a nd s u b s e q u e n t ly p r a c t i s ed me d i c i ne a nd conducted research i n the Un i t ed States. Dr. C h e ng r e t u r n ed to H o n g K o n g f r om the USA i n the 1980s to u n d e r t a ke f a m i l y bu s i ne ss a n d engage i n p u b l i c s e r v i c e . H e s u b s e q u e n t l y b e c a me c h a i rman a nd ma n a g i ng director of The Wo r l d -Wi de Investment Co. Ltd. and was director o n the boards of several p u b l ic and private corporations. Cu r r en t ly he is a member of the Board of Directors of the H o n g K o n g I n s t i t u t e f o r M o n e t a r y Research. Dr. Cheng's excellent social and business connections w i l l greatly benefit CUH K ' s development. Since the late 1980s, Dr. Cheng has been very active i n public service. He was head of the Ce n t r al Po l i cy U n i t of the H o n g K o n g SAR, a nd is v i c e - c h a i r man of the Co u n c il for Sustainable De v e l o pme nt as w e l l as c h a i r man or memb er of several other public service committees. F o r me r ly c h a i rman of the Un i v e r s i ty Gr an ts Comm i t t ee of H o n g K o n g a nd a member of the Education Commission, Dr. Ch e ng was responsible for m a p p i ng o ut the p l an for a nd t e n d e r i ng advice to the H o n g K o n g SAR g o v e r nme nt o n h i g h er e d u c a t i on d e v e l o pme n t. He also ma de i m p o r t a n t c o n t r i b u t i o n s t o w a r d s f o rmu l a t i ng policies for advancing higher education and allocating resources. As a member of the University Council, Dr. Cheng has contributed generously his t i me a nd ad v i ce to t he d e l i b e r a t i on of ma j or issues r e l a t i ng to the Un i v e r s i t y 's l o n g - t e rm d e v e l o pme n t. He was a c t i ng c h a i rman a nd memb er of the Task Force to A d v i se o n I n s t i t u t i o n al I n t e g r a t i on of The Chinese U n i v e r s i ty of H o n g K o n g before his appo i n tment as chairman. U n i v e r s i ty M e m b e r s H o n o u r ed • Prof. Ye u ng Yue -man a nd Prof. S h um Ka r - p i ng of the Un i v e r s i ty were o n the Ch i ef Ex e c u t i v e 's 2003 H o n o u rs L i st published i n the Gazette on 1st July 2003. Prof. Yeung Yue-man, professor of g e o g r a p h y, wa s a w a r d ed t he S i l ver B a u h i n ia Star. Prof. S h um K a r - p i n g, research p r o f e s s or of the F a c u l ty of Science, received the Chief Executive's C o m m e n d a t i o n f o r C o m m u n i t y Service.
