A t the U n i v e r s i t y 's 58th c o n g r e g a t i on h e ld o n 5 th December 2002 at the University Mall, Prof. Ambrose Y.C. K i ng was f o rma l ly installed as the f i f th vice-chancellor of the University. Four distinguished persons were awarded honorary doctorates on the same occasion. Presiding at the ceremony was Dr. Lee Hon-chiu, Chairman of the University Council. The function also saw the conferment of first and higher degrees to some 4, 500 graduates, w h o include the first batch of g r a d u a t es f r o m the M B A P r o g r a mme i n Finance at Tsinghua University and the BBA Programme i n Ho t el and To u r i sm Management. The f o ur recipients of h o n o r a ry degrees we re Prof. Ji X i a n l i n, em i n e nt scholar i n o r i e n t al studies a nd w o r l d acclaimed expert in Eastern literature and languages; Prof. Ferid Mu r a d, No b el laureate i n p h y s i o l o g y / me d i c i ne 1998 and chairman of the Department of Integrative Biology and Pharmacology at the Un i v e r s i ty of Texas-Houston Me d i c al School; Ms. Lee Lai Shan, g o ld medallist i n wome n 's mistral i n the O l ymp ic Games 1996 and i n the A s i an Games 2002; a n d Dr. L u i Ch e - wo o, d i s t i n g u i s h ed e n t r e p r e n e ur a nd p h i l a n t h r o p i st a nd c h a i r man of K. Wa h G r o u p, K. Wa h International Ho l d i n gs Ltd., K. Wah Construction Materials Ltd., K. Wah Properties (Holdings) Ltd., and Stanford Hotels International. Prof. Ji was conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature, honoris causa, i n absentia. Prof. M u r a d received the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Ms. Lee and Dr. L u i were each awa r d ed the degree of Doctor of Social Science, honoris causa. T h e ir citations we re w r i t t e n a nd delivered by Prof. D a v id Parker and Prof. Serena Jin. In the afternoon the four constituent colleges, the Part- t i me Degree P r o g r amme s, a nd the G r a d u a te School (for master's degree graduates) also held graduation ceremonies for their graduates.
