News in Br ief Council News New Vice-Chairman Mr. Anthony Neoh, QC, JP, has bee n elected by the University Council as vice-chairman of the Council from 1st July 1995. He succeeds Dr. James Z.M. Kung on the latter's retirement from office. Mr. Neoh became Council member on 27th November 1994. New Council Members • Dr. Chou Wen-hsien, managing director of Winsor Industrial Corporation and chairma n o f Ocean-Land, has been elected by the Board of Trustees of New Asia College as a member o f the University Council for a period of three years from 16th April 1995, succeeding Mr. H. C. Tang. Dr. Chou is currently vice-chairman o f the Board o f Trustees of New Asia College and chairman o f the Board o f Directors o f the Hong Kong Music Institute. He also chairs the Chou's Foundation and the Winso r Education Foundation wh i ch have enabled many local students in financial difficulty to further their studies. • Prof. Kao Ma y - c h i ng has been elected by the Assembly o f Fellows o f New Asia College as a member o f the University Council for a term of three years from 27th April 1995. She succeeds Dr. Serena Jin. Prof. Kao is professor o f fine arts and director of the University's A rt Museum. • Dr. Deanna Lee Rudgard has been elected by the Chung Chi College Board o f Trustees as a member o f the University Council for the unexpired period o f membership of Dr. James Z.M. Kung from 1st July 1995 to 10th February 1998. Dr. Rudgard is honorary fellow of her alma mater, St. Hilda's College of Oxford University, member o f the Rhodes Scholarship Selection Committee, and member of the executive committee o f the Hong Kong Society for the Protection of Children. She is also director o f various companies including Hysan Development Company Ltd. and Lee Hysan Estate Company Ltd. • The following persons have been elected/re-elected by the Un i v e r s i ty Senate as members o f the University Counci l for three years from 1st August 1995: - Prof. K u an Hs i n - c hi o f the Department o f Government and Public Adm i n i s t r a t i on (re-elected); - Prof. Joseph C.K. Lee o f the Department o f Anatomical and Cellular Pathology (re-elected); - Prof. Tunney F. Lee o f the Department o f Architecture. Council Appointment Prof. Chan K a i - m i ng o f the Depa r tment o f Orthopaedics and Traumatology has been appointed by the University Council as University Dean o f Students for one year from 1st August 1995. CU Staff Honoured The outstanding performance o f many members o f the University has gained recognition f r om various quarters. OLI to Honour Sir Q. W. Lee Sir Q.W. Lee, chairman o f the University Council, w i l l be awarded the degree o f Do c t or o f Business Administration, honoris causa, by the Open Learning Institute i n December 1995, in recognition of his remarkable achievements in banking and extensive contribution to education and public service. Two Members on Queen 's Birthday Honours List Dr. Chan Po-fun, Trustee o f United College, and Prof . Chan Kai-ming o f the Department o f Orthopaedics and Traumatology, have respectively been made a Member o f the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) and an Officer of the Most Excellent Order o f the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's Birthday Honours Lis t announced on 17th June 1995. Medical Professor Honoured by Australasian College Prof. Teik E. Oh was recently elected councillor of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthesia. This is the first time an Asian fellow of the college working outside Australasia has been so honoured.
