Seminars Concerts • Exhibition * Professor Christian B. Anfinsen, the 1972 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, visited the University and conducted a seminar on 'Confirmational Studies of Proteins and Derived Peptides — Revelance to Vaccines' on 6th December, 1985. Professor Anfinsen is presently Professor of Biology of Johns Hopkins University, USA. The seminar was organized by the Department of Biochemistry. * The Institute of Chinese Studies organized the following seminars: 一 ‘Taoist Rituals from the Five Dynasties to Sung', conducted by Professor Liu Ts'un-yan, Professor Emeritus of Chinese, Australian National University, on 17th December, 1985. —'The Excavations from the Tomb of the King of Nan Yeh', conducted by Mr. Huang Zhanyue, Associate Research Fellow, Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, on 23rd January, 1986. —'Early Neolithic Culture in China', conducted by Professor An Zhimin, Research Fellow, Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, on 25th February. * The United College held its Annual Workshop, on ‘Women and University Education', on 3rd January. Workshop participants examined the latest development of university education in Hong Kong and its socio-economic implications. * At the invitation of the Departments of Biology and Biochemistry, Professor Patricia H. Clarke, former Professor of Microbial Biochemistry of the University College, University of London, and Kan Tong-Po Visiting Professor of this University, conducted the following seminars: —‘The Amidase of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: 1 . Enzymes with New Substrate Specificities' (14th January); —'The Amidase of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa: 2. Molecular Structure of Amidase Genes' (17th January). * The Special Economic Zones Data and Research Unit of the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies organized a public lecture on ‘The Present and Future of the Shenzhen SEZ'by Professor Fang Sheng, Vice- President of Shenzhen University and Professor of Economy of the People's University of China, on 16th January, 1986. * The Department of Sociology and the Centre for Contemporary Asian Studies jointly presented the following seminars: -‘Forecasting China's Working Population in 2000' , conducted by Professor Liu Chiguang, Associate Director of the Institute of Population Studies, Zhongshan University, on 23rd January. —'Declining Death Rate , Aging Problem and Policy Change: Case of Guangdong', conducted by Professor Lin Daoshan, Director of Population Statistical Office, Institute of Population Studies, Zhongshan University, on 30th January. * The Department of Physics presented the following seminars: 一 'Hermann Weyl's Contribution to Physics', conducted by Professor C.N. Yang, Einstein Professor of Physics and Director of Institute for Theoretical Physics, State University of New York, Stony Brook, and Honorary Professor of Physics of this University, on 27th January. —‘Fractional Quantum Hall Effect' , conducted by Dr. A.H. MacDonald, Division of Physics, National Research Council of Canada, on 19th February. * The New Asia College organized a public lecture on ‘A Reappraisal of the I-Min Ideology during the Late Ming and Early Ch'ing Period' by Dr. Andrew C.K. Hsieh, Associate Professor of History, Grinnell College, USA, on 29th January. * The Department of Accounting and Finance organized a public lecture on ‘The Use of New Financial Instruments in Hong Kong' by Mr. Anthony Yuen, Vice-President of the Bank of America (Hong Kong), on 31st January. * The Department of Computer Science organized a half-day seminar on 'Computer Studies at the Form Six Level' on 1st February. About 300 computer studies teachers, career masters and principals of secondary schools attended the seminar. * The Japanese Studies Section presented a public lecture in Japanese on 'The Age of Commercial Revolution and Japan' by Professor Asada Minoru of Soka Women's Junior College, Japan, on 4th February. * The Physical Education Unit and the Hong Kong Post-Secondary Colleges Athletic Association jointly organized a Workshop in Selected Sports for Physical Education Teachers and Coaches from 15th February to 1st March. Sponsored by the Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, the Workshop formed part of the programme of the 1986 Hong Kong Festival of Sports. The ACADEMIC/CULTURAL EVENTS 21
