Council New s Sir Yuet-Keung Kan Re-appointed as Chairman His Excellency the Chancellor has, upon the renomination of the University Council, re-appointed Dr. the Hon. Sir Yuet-Keung Kan as Chairman of the Council for a further term of three years from 24th October, 1979 to 23rd October, 1982. New Council Member Dr. the Hon. Harry Fang has been elected by the Unofficial Members of the Legislative Council as a member of the University Council to succeed Mr. James W u Man-hon, who retired in September 1979. Research Units Renamed The Research Unit on Chinese Medicinal Materials has been renamed as "Research Centre for Chinese Medicinal Materials". This signifies the development of the Unit into a full-fledged research centre. The Senate has also resolved to rename the "Research Unit on Food Protein Production from Wastes" as "Research Centre for Food Protein Productio Exchange Programme w i th Soka University One of the aims of the Centre for East Asian Studies is to have a better knowledge of Japanese culture and Sino-Japanese relations. To facilitate the research at the Centre and to promote understanding between the Chinese and Japanese people, the University in 1975 reached an agreement with Soka University to initiate an Exchange Programme to provide for the two institutions (1) to exchange staff in accordance with their teaching and research needs; (2) to accept graduates of the other institution who wish to pursue further studies under the supervision of designated professors as Special Graduate Students, and (3) to exchange publications and teaching materials. Under the Exchange Programme, Soka University has sent Professor Mitsuo Moita (1976), Professor Nihei Masasuke (1977-78) and Professor Kinnosuke Komuro (1979-80) to The Chinese University as Visiting Professors, and this University has sent Mr. Sheung Chung-ho (1976), Dr. Chingho Chen (1977), Professor T. K. Cheng (1977 ), Professor S. S. Hsueh (1978) and Dr. Byron S. J. Weng (1980) to Soka University to give lectures and conduct research. The Chinese University has also received from 1977 to 1980 an annual donation of US$10,000 from Soka University for the establishment of ten lASP (International Asian Studies Programme) Scholarships, four to be awarded to Japanese and six to Asian students pursuing the IASP programme.
