Hong Kong Conference on East-West Comparative Literature The first 'Hong Kong Conference on East-West Comparative Literature' was held by the Comparative Literature and Translation Centre of the Institute of Chinese Studies of the University from 14th to 16th August, 1979. Through theoretical and practical reconsiderations of some basic concepts and methodologies in East-West comparative literary studies, some of the crucial problems encountered in the comparative study of Chinese literature were raised and their possible solutions discussed, with the final aim to broaden the scope of both Chinese literature and comparative literature studies. Dr. M a Lin, the Vice-Chancellor, and Dr. Ching- ho Chen , Director of the Institute of Chinese Studies, in their opening addresses, both emphasized the importance of such a 'comparative approach'towards a ‘broad but unified concept of Chinese Studies' here at The Chinese University since the University aspires to ‘function as the cultural exchanging ground between the East and the West'. Gannon of the Arts Faculty, Professor D. C. Lau of the Department of Chinese Language & Literature,Dr. Shu-hsien Liu of the Department of Philosophy, Mr. Stephen C. Soong of the Comparative Literature and Translation Centre, and other teaching and research members
