Plan for Fourth College Announced —Shaw College to be Established by 1988 By courtesy of the Government Information Services A fourth College will be established in the University in 1988. This was formally announced by the Vice- Chancellor at a press conference which took place on campus on 6th February. The Press Statement The following is the full text of the Vice- Chancellor's statement at the press conference: First of all, I would like to thank you for attending this press conference. About a week ago, you reported a presentation ceremony which took place at Government House, at which, following his large contribution last year to several charities and educational institutions, Sir Run Run Shaw presented cheques for over HK$120 million to His Excellency the Governor. Of this a sum of HK$100 million is for The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Today, it gives me great pleasure to announce that this magnanimous donation, which is generous by any standards, and which is, incidentally, the biggest single sum ever received by the University at any one time, would be used to establish a fourth College in the University. At its meeting yesterday, the University Council decided that the new College should be named 'Shaw College'. The University is pleased to announce that Sir Run Run has also kindly agreed to accept the title of 'College Patron' and to lend his continual support to the establishment of the new College. Meanwhile, the University has invited Dr. the Hon. Q.W. Lee, Dr. T.K. Ann, Mr. H.J. Shen and a representative of The Shaw Foundation, Mr. Louis Page, to serve as advisers to the Planning Committee of the fourth College. The Planning Committee is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. The University has been in existence for over twenty-two years now. For much of this period, while the University has provided formal instruction to students, the three constituent Colleges have been responsible for student-orientated teaching. Moreover, it is left to the Colleges to expand the students' cultural interests and involve them in extracurricular activities, the idea being to encourage the fullest participation on the part of the students in community life on campus. Over the years, the student population of the University has been growing steadily and today each of the three constituent Colleges has about 1,700 to 1,800 students. The University, therefore , has felt the need for expanding College facilities in order to cope with the growing student numbers. It is at this opportune moment that Sir Run Run Shaw NEWS 1
