AnArchitect'sMaster Plan In 2002, the University appointed Prof. Liu Yuyang of the Department of Architecture to draw up a blue print for campus development for the next 10 years. The C h i n e se U n i v e r s i t y Bu l l e t in talked to Prof. Liu about the salient features of his master plan. Blue Print for Campus Development Three Spatial Themes Prof. Liu's conceptual master plan is driven by appearance a n d s t y le a nd not o n l y functionality. To come up with the plan, he spent some eight months doing extensive research from the perspectives of the University's history, landscape, buildings, traffic and human flows. His conclusion is that future development can be guided by three spatial themes: the ‘rustic', the ‘monastic: and the ‘urbane'. ‘Rustic' refers to CUHK's inherent quality of being at one with nature. ‘Monastic' harks back to the origin of the modern university in 12th- and 13th- century monasteries. ‘Urbane' refers to the vitality, continuous rejuvenation, and diversity that a campus environment should embody. Many universities in the world have more than one of these three qualities. Campus Master Planning for a New Decade 3
