B.Sc. in Computer Science (CSCIN)

The Computer Science programme (CS) was launched by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in 1978.  The primary goal of the Computer Science programme is to prepare graduates to understand the field of computing and engineering with a global view of both the academic discipline and profession. The programme strives to achieve this through broad and coherent coverage of the computer science disciplines by exposing our students to the basic theories as well as to advanced high-level concepts and system integration skills. We also expect our students to be sympathetic to ethical, professional and societal issues associated with information technologies. The programme prepares our students to be independent thinkers who possess good problem-solving skills, the ability to learn independently and the desire for life-long learning.


At the end of the course of studies, students will have

  1. Acquired solid fundamental knowledge in mathematics, computer science with a breadth of inter-disciplinary knowledge.
  2. Acquired independent thinking, possess problem-solving skills, and excel in the capability for self-learning to allow for life-long learning.
  3. Acquired leadership qualities, and good communication, teamwork, social, and professional skills.

  • to be able to identify, formulate, and solve computer science problems
  • to be able to design, implement, test, and evaluate a computer system, component, or algorithm to meet desired needs
  • to receive the broad education necessary to understand the impact of computer science solutions in a global and societal context
  • to be able to communicate effectively
  • to be able to succeed in research or industry related to computer science
  • to have solid knowledge in computer science and engineering, including programming and languages, algorithms, theory, databases, etc.
  • to integrate well into and contribute to the local society and the global community related to computer science
  • to practise high standard of professional ethics
  • to be able to draw on and integrate knowledge from many related areas

Every student is assigned an academic advisor who meets with the students at least once a year for purposes of general supervision such as course selection, guided study, adaptation to University learning modes and disciplinary fundamentals, etc.  Students with academic problems or on academic probation / extended probation are required to have a monthly meeting with the academic advisor.

The programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Graduates are eligible to join Scheme A training of HKIE in the disciplines of Electronics (ENS) / Information (INF).
