GUANGDONG ENGLISH TEACHERS

40 English language educators in the primary school sector in Guangdong, including panel chairpersons, teachers, inspectors and researchers

PROGRAMME PERIOD

9 to 27 July 2023

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The Programme aims to help participants to:

  • keep abreast of the latest trends in English language learning and teaching;

  • have a deeper understanding of the latest theories of Teaching English as a Second Language at primary level;

  • translate theories of language teaching into classroom practices;

  • select and adapt e-learning resources to enhance language learning and teaching;

  • develop skills in designing school-based English language curriculum to suit the needs of their students; and

  • reflect on their teaching.

PROGRAMME CONTENT

The Programme covers the following learning areas:

  • Latest methodologies of Teaching English as a Second Language at primary level (about 70%) that aim at:

    1. developing learners' generic skills, values and attitudes;​

    2. adopting a learner-centred and task-based approach in the planning and organisation of learning, teaching and assessment;

    3. catering for learner diversity through developing a wide range of tasks and employing teaching strategies that suit the needs, interests, abilities and learning styles of different learners;

    4. promoting learner independence through the development of lifelong language learning skills and strategies;

    5. facilitating the development of a 'reading to learn' culture and helping learners acquire effective reading skills and develop good reading habits;

    6. encouraging the use of various learning and teaching materials, including language arts and non-language arts;

    7. creating a language-rich environment through promoting a cross-curricular approach to learning; and 

    8. promoting assessment for/as learning in addition to assessment of learning.

  • School-based curriculum development (about 15%) that aims at:

    1. facilitating the development of a school-based curriculum to suit the needs, interests and abilities of their students, and the school context;​

    2. facilitating the development and implementation of a school-based English language curriculum to support lifelong learning; and

    3. enhancing curriculum planning, management and evaluation.

  • Use of IT in enhancing English learning and teaching (about 15%) that aims at:

    1. promoting the use of IT for interactive learning;​

    2. selecting, adapting and evaluating language e-learning resources; and

    3. providing hands-on-practices in the use of IT in enhancing English learning.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE
  • Highlights

    • The Programme:

      1. enables participants to translate theories into practice;​

      2. caters for the participants' diverse background in terms of subject knowledge, language proficiency and teaching experience;

      3. creates a Community of Practice among the 40 teachers who come from different cities of Guangdong Province; and

      4. includes school visits and tours that enhance the participants' knolwedge and skills of English teaching.
