Uterine Artery Embolization
Uterine artery embolization (UAE) is a minimally invasive method in the treatment of uterine fibroids. This is a randomized controlled trial collaborated with Department of Imaging and Interventional Radiology.
Uterine fibroid is a benign tumor arising from the smooth muscle cells of myometrium, rarely become cancer. The patients usually have heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain and pressure symptoms on urinary bladder or bowel. UAE is performed by interventional radiologist under X-ray imaging guidance. Placement of catheter into uterine arteries and delivery of microspheres block the vessels, thereby causing to necrosis and shrink of uterine fibroids. Nearly 90% of patient with fibroids can relieve symptoms after treatment.
UAE is less invasive, less blood loss and not necessary to anesthesia compared to surgical intervention. Patient can recover quickly and return to normal daily living.
