Message from Director
Prof. CHOY Kwong Wai Richard
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Faculty of Medicine at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CU Medicine) has received a generous donation from Basecare Fertility Preservation Research Fund to support the establishment of the Fertility Preservation Research Centre (the Centre), with the aims to develop a world-leading centre for infertility treatment and scientific research into fertility preservation, the causes, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infertility.
Infertility affects about 1% to 2% of most populations in the world, including Hong Kong. Though infertility is common and severe among South and East Asians, there is no centre dedicated to fertility preservation and research in the whole of Southeast Asia. Therefore, the Centre which is developed with the support of the donation will be a very unique research unit in the area.
The Centre will enable CU Medicine pioneering in fertility preservation research, to further improve patient service and enhance its leading position in reproductive medicine and fertility preservation research.
Based on the state-of the-art technology developed and the top-notch studies conducted by the CU Medicine’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the Centre will also look into the genetic mechanisms of infertility and identifying genetic markers for pre-symptomatic diagnosis.
