ADMISSION
General Admission Requirements
For the Doctor of Philosophy the applicant shall have:
-
a Master’s degree from a recognized university; or
-
a Bachelor’s degree, normally with Second Class Honours in the upper division or above,
-
been registered in a course of study for a Master’s degree at this University for at least one year and demonstrated research ability; or been registered in a course of study for a doctoral degree at a recognized university for at least one year, and been approved for admission by the Graduate Council; or
-
obtained the degrees of MBChB, or equivalent, or under special circumstances, the degree of Bachelor, for admission to programmes of the Faculty of Medicine.
For a Master’s programme, the applicant shall have:
-
graduated from a recognized university and obtained a Bachelor’s degree, normally with honours not lower than Second Class; or
-
graduated from an honours programme of a recognized university with a Bachelor’s degree, normally with an average grade of not lower than "B"; or
-
completed a course of study in a tertiary educational institution and obtained professional or similar qualifications equivalent to an honours degree.
All applicants shall fulfil the English Language Proficiency Requirements prescribed below:
(a) possess a pass grade in English in one of the following examinations:
-
Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (AS Level);

Hong Kong Higher Level Examination;
-
CUHK Matriculation Examination;
-
General Certificate of Education A-Level / AS-Level; or
(b) achieve Level 4 or above in the English Language subject of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) Examination ; or
(c) have a degree from a university in Hong Kong or an English-speaking country; or
(d) achieve the scores as specified below in the following tests2 :

TOEFL3, 4: 550 (Paper-based) / 213 (Computer-based) / 79 (Internet-based);

GMAT: Band 21 (verbal);

IELTS3, 5: 6.5 (Academic); or
(e) have obtained a recognized professional qualification awarded in Hong Kong or an English speaking country
Applicants who do not fulfill the above English language Proficiency Requirements may be admitted in exceptional circumstances upon convincing justification.

Tuition Waiver for Local Research Postgraduate (RPg) Students
Starting from 2018/19 academic year, the Government would provide tuition waiver for all local students enrolled in UGC-funded RPg programmes. All local students enrolled in UGC-funded RPg programmes will be provided with tuition waiver.
