CUHK Holds 2022 Greater Bay Area Science Forum Distinguished Lectures
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) co-organized the 2022 Greater Bay Area Science Forum (GSF) Distinguished Lectures with GSF Secretariat in hybrid mode on 30 July. Professor Bai Chun-Li, Professor Yau Shing Tung and Professor Andrew Yao were invited to share their insights and held dialogues with young scientists in the Greater Bay Area on topics comprising knowledge seeking, academic studies, innovation, research experience, as well as life philosophy and ethics. The event is also positioned to cultivate future science and technology talents of the country. Officiating guests joining the opening ceremony included Professor Bai Chun-Li, Chairman of GSF and Chairman of the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO); Mr. Xu Dianhui, Deputy Secretary General of the People’s Government of Guangdong Province; and Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK. In his speech, Professor Tuan remarked: “As a crucial part of the 9+2 Events of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum, the Distinguished Lectures also dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. We hope that the event will broaden the horizons our participants and enhance their scientific conceptions to nurture talents via a whole-person approach.”
The event attracted more than 300 young scientists, scholars and students from universities and research institutes to participate offline, and more than 4,000 people watched the live broadcast online. This event is a response of the Greater Bay Area Science Forum to the “Nansha Plan” to be based in the Greater Bay Area in collaboration with Hong Kong and Macau to provide a platform to promote the development of scientific and technological innovation, and it is one of the events to facilitate the exchange of young talents in GBA and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the HKSAR. Initiated by the Chinese Academy of Science, ANSO established the Greater Bay Area Science Forum in 2021. The Forum is supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the China Association for Science and Technology, and is organized by the Guangdong Provincial People’s Government. It has become the highest-level academic event in the Greater Bay Area. ANSO is an international, non-profit and non-governmental scientific organization for identifying and addressing common issues in the Belt and Road Region to tackle world scientific challenges. Founding members include scientific and research organizations from Russia, Pakistan, Poland, Hungary, Nepal, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand and Brazil. CUHK is the only institution from Hong Kong in the Alliance.
