Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Speaks at the Global Forum of University Presidents for Tsinghua’s 110th Anniversary Celebration
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was invited to attend the Global Forum of University Presidents 2021 (GFUP 2021) for the 110th Anniversary of Tsinghua University. The six-day anniversary event was held from 19 to 24 April with both online and off-line registration. Presidents and representatives from almost 330 universities across the globe participated in the Forum to exchange views on the challenges, vision and new missions of universities.
The GFUP 2021 featured four sessions, each highlighting a unique theme. Professor Tuan gave a presentation on the theme Global Carbon Neutrality: Universities Responsibility and Action. He introduced CUHK’s engagement towards achieving carbon neutrality and the mission of social responsibility, including the commitment to promoting sustainable development. In response to the 2030 sustainable development goals set by the United Nations, the University has incorporated the global carbon neutrality goal into the 5-year strategic plan. During the thematic session, leaders from 40 prominent universities around the world shared their perspectives on the role and action plans of universities in achieving the global carbon neutrality goal.
The long-lasting collaborative relationship between CUHK and Tsinghua could be dated back to the establishment of partnership as early as in 1985, after which both sides have been striving together to enhance linkages and exchanges in fields ranging from teaching and research, to student and executive interflow, yielding far-reaching results. Professor Tuan joined the 110th anniversary celebration activities, indicating the joint efforts in building open and integrated universities, and promoting the further development of higher education.
Vice-Chancellor of CUHK Delivers Speech at the Establishment Ceremony of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance for Engineering
Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) attended and gave speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance (GHMUA) for Engineering cum Engineering Education Establishment and Development Seminar on 10 May. The officiating guests joining the ceremony included Mr. Xu Kai, Deputy Director of the Education and Technology Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR); Mr. Li Jinjun, Director of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs Office of the Department of Education of Guangdong Province; Mr. Yu Yang, Deputy Director of the Shenzhen Municipal Education Bureau; Mr. Teng Sio Hong, Deputy Director of Education and Youth Development Bureau in the Macao SAR; Professor Luo Jun, President of Sun Yat-sen University and Professor Song Yonghua, Rector of the University of Macau.
Professor Tuan delivered an opening speech at the inauguration ceremony as the Vice Chairman of the Alliance. He extended his blessing and hope for the sub-alliance that it will vigorously promote the development of engineering education in the Greater Bay Area, as well as the cooperation and resource sharing in the field of engineering. The event allowed participants to have in-depth discussions and exchanges on topics covering talent training, science and technology innovation, and education development in the three regions.
Under the GHMUA, a wide range of professional alliances have been established to promote exchanges and cooperation in specific fields. The GHMUA for Engineering was approved in November 2020 with the aim to strengthen linkages in engineering education among alliance members, opening up a new channel for development of close collaboration.
CUHK and China Academy of Urban Planning & Design Conduct Joint Academic Webinar
The Institute of Future Cities (IOFC) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and China Academy of Urban Planning & Design (CAUPD) jointly organized the first webinar with the theme of “Smart City” and signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) regarding strategic partnership on 9 April. The event was co-chaired by Dr. Wang Kai, Director of CAUPD, and Professor Fung Tung, Director of IOFC, who delivered welcoming speeches at the opening ceremony. Participants joining the activities included Mr. Fang Yu, President of CAUPD (Shenzhen); Mr. Dai Jifeng, Vice-President of CAUPD (Shenzhen); as well as members from CUHK comprising Professor Huang Bo, Geography and Resource Management; Professor Edward Ng, School of Architecture; and Professor Ng Mee Kam, Associate Director of IOFC.
Both sides reviewed the past collaborations and looked forward to a broader scope of academic exchange through the renewed MoU in strengthening the connections and building consensus, jointly contributing to the promotion of green, smart and sustainable development in the Greater Bay Area. Participants shared the recent research achievements of their respective research groups and presented project reports relating to smart and sustainable city during the academic webinar.
CUHK and Tsinghua Co-organize Positive Psychology Symposium Online
The Faculty of Social Sciences of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) joined hands with the Faculty of Social Sciences of Tsinghua University to organize an academic symposium on growth mindset and positive education online on 16 May. The live broadcast symposium brought renowned cultural psychology experts and professors to join the discussion. Professor Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences of CUHK, was invited to give a keynote speech for the Symposium. He delivered a 2-hour presentation entitled “Based on Chinese Culture, Leveraging on the Growth Mindset Model and Practice of Technology”. More than 20,000 people attended the event and over 1,000 pieces of conversation were received in the interaction room during the broadcast.

CUHK Attends the Opening Ceremony of National Science and Technology Week cum GBA Forum
With the support of Shenzhen Education Bureau and hosted by the China Association for Science and Technology, the opening ceremony of National Science and Technology Week Shenzhen cum Greater Bay Area Youth Science Literacy Forum 2021 was held from 23 to 25 May online and onsite in Shenzhen. Professor Wong Kam-Fai, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Director of the Centre for Innovation and Technology of The Chinese University of Hong Kong was invited to attend the activities and deliver a talk for the Forum.
Professor Wong gave a presentation with the topic of “Artificial Intelligence and Human Intelligence” to analyze the complementary strength of contemporary intelligent technology and human intelligence. He shared his ideas with participating guests and academics as well students, with in-depth discussions held in related topics. Apart from thematic talks, exhibitions were arranged to showcase the development of advanced technologies, such as virtual reality museums and robotics.
