Vice Chancellor of CUHK Speaks at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2021
Prof. Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) was invited to join the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) 2021 and delivered a talk in the plenary session with theme of Scientific and Technological Innovation. Held from 8 to 10 July, WAIC 2021 was co-hosted by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. More than 1,000 distinguished scholars, experts, entrepreneurs and investors in the field of artificial intelligence from home and abroad spoke at the conference. Speakers included Prof. Tang Xiao-Ou, SenseTime founder and CUHK Faculty of Engineering professor; Mr. Li Yan-Hong, Baidu founder and CEO; Mr. Hu Hou-Kun, Huawei Deputy Chairman, to name but a few. At the Hong Kong session, CUHK speakers comprised of Prof. Anthony So, Associate Dean (Student Affairs) of Faculty of Engineering; and Prof. Jia Jia-Ya, founder and Chairman of SmartMore and professor of Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Prof. Tuan shared CUHK’s experience in artificial intelligence (AI) research and education programme at the Principal Roundtable Session named “AI Innovation and Talent Development”. He mentioned Hong Kong’s first full-time AI related degree programme “Artificial Intelligence: Systems and Technologies”, which was launched by CUHK in 2018. The University recently collaborated with Shanghai AI Laboratory to establish the CUHK Interdisciplinary Artificial Intelligence Research Institute to focus on the major needs of the country and the development of the Greater Bay Area, jointly creating a world-class interdisciplinary innovation platform. He remarked that CUHK will continue to promote technological innovation and breakthroughs with its international educational teams and research strengths, to foster high-level research talents for the nation, and to strengthen cooperation among industry, education and research.
Based on the University’s world-leading research excellence, CUHK has identified major areas in its strategic plan as research priorities. Information and Automation Technology is one of the cross-cutting themes in these areas which focuses interdisciplinary research directions to reach the next level of excellence. CUHK joined hands with 15 universities around the world in 2018 as well as SenseTime, the world’s leading AI company, to initiate a Global AI Academic Alliance. The Alliance aims at boosting cross-disciplinary exchanges and promote international collaboration on AI technology, constructing mechanisms and platforms for AI study, talent training and research developments.
