A Regional Collaboration Seminar of Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (JHMUA) was held on 16 June both online and offline in Jiangsu Province. The Alliance signed a strategic collaboration memorandum of understanding with Jiangyin Municipal Government. The JHMUA Jiangyin Base was officially launched at the meeting. Mr. Shu Gang-Bo, Deputy Director of the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office of the Ministry of Education; Mr. Yang Shu-Bing, Deputy Head of Jiangsu Education Department; and Mr. Xu Feng, Member of the Standing Committee of the Wuxi Municipal Party Committee and Secretary of the Jiangyin Municipal Party Committee, joined the event and delivered speeches. Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) attended the meeting on behalf of the University. Heads of academic exchange units from Alliance member universities in Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao exchanged views and discussed on the challenges and opportunities of regional collaboration in the post-pandemic era at the seminar.
JHMUA was established in 2021 to promote talent training, scientific research collaboration, and cultural heritage among universities in Jiangsu, Hong Kong and Macao, and to jointly contribute to the development of Yangtze River Delta region and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. CUHK is one of the first standing committee members of the Alliance.
The annual board meeting of the Beijing Hong Kong University Alliance (BHUA) was held online on 30 June. Participants joining the meeting included Mr. Shu Gang-Bo, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of the Ministry of Education; Mr. Ji Xiao-Zhe, Deputy Director of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Office of Beijing Municipal Education Commission; Mr. Derek Lai, Principal Assistant Secretary (Higher Education) of the Education Bureau of the HKSAR; as well as representatives of 20 member institutions of BHUA. Professor Chan Wai Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) attended and spoke at the meeting. Professor Chan said: “Through active participation in BHUA, CUHK is able to explore and deepen collaboration plans with member institutions in whole-person education, scientific research collaboration, as well as academic and student exchanges to achieve the goal of coordinated development.”
Founded in 2018 by CUHK and various local and Beijing universities, BHUA aims at establishing closer linkage and exchange, enhancing talent nurturing and research collaboration, as well as the levels of higher education in the two regions. The Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research (HKIER) of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) successfully hosted the “Policy Forum on Education Reform & Workforce Mobility in the Greater Bay Area, China” on 6-7 June, 2022 in a hybrid format. Sixteen researchers from various fields of expertise were invited to present and discuss in three panels relating to education and labor mobility in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). The Forum attracted participants in person and online from different countries, including scholars, students, educational practitioners and policy-makers.
The event was co-organized by Professor Kenneth K. Wong of Brown University and Professor Dongshu Ou, Associate Director of HKIER with the support from Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance (GHMUA). It aimed at bringing together leading researchers from different regions to discuss issues regarding educational reform and social opportunities in the GBA from multiple perspectives encompassing economic, social, political, psychological and policy aspects.
Initiated by CUHK, Sun Yat-sen University and University of Macau, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau University Alliance was established in November 2016 as a higher education platform which aspires to extend the current efforts of elite universities in promoting academic cooperation in the three regions. Member institutions include 9 universities from Hong Kong, 25 universities from Guangdong Province and 7 universities from Macao.
