CUHK Holds Meeting with Tencent
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Tencent held an online meeting on 8 June to discuss collaboration plan on the New Cornerstone Investigator Program. Representatives from CUHK included Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President; Professor Sham Mai Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Dennis Lo, Associate Dean of Faculty of Medicine; Professor He Xuhua, Choh-Ming Li Professor of Mathematics; Professor Lu Yi Chun of Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering; Professor Benny Zee, Director of Research and Knowledge Transfer Services; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. Tencent representatives comprised Ms. Wang Wurong, Vice President, Mr. Tong He-Feng, Deputy Secretary-General and other members.
The New Cornerstone Investigator Program was launched on 30 April 2022 with the goal of invigorating research into basic sciences. It is a non-profit program to provide long-term support to outstanding scientists who focus on fundamental research projects that are of profound importance to humankind. This independent program is led by scientists with funding from Tencent which has pledged to provide RMB 10 billion to the program over 10 years while exploring the feasibility of a long-term sustainable fund. Focusing on mathematics and physical sciences, and biological and biomedical sciences, the Program encourages interdisciplinary research with the hope to facilitate scientists to discover new phenomena, achieve scientific breakthroughs and create new fields.
CUHK Faculty of Engineering and Tencent also held a meeting to discuss future collaboration plan on 18 July. CUHK participants include Professor Martin Wong, Dean of Faculty of Engineering; Professor Lee Tan, Associate Dean of Faculty of Engineering; Professor Chan Chun Kwong, Professor of Practice in Fin Tech at Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management. Tencent participant included Mr. Li Tsz Shu, Senior Director of Greater Bay Area Public Affairs and other representatives.
CUHK and Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Meet Online
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory held an online meeting on 5 July to discuss development plans of CUHK Artificial Intelligence and Interdisciplinary Research Institute and joint training of students. CUHK participants included Professor Alan Chan, Provost; Professor Chan Wai Yee, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Professor Sham Mai Har, Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. Representatives from Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory included Director Professor Tang Xiao-Ou and Professor Lin Dahua.
In September 2021, CUHK and the Shanghai Artificial Intelligence Laboratory joined hands to establish the CUHK Artificial Intelligence and Interdisciplinary Research Institute to foster scientific research, to target cutting‑edge fields, and help Hong Kong develop into an international innovation and technology hub as laid down in the National 14th Five-year Plan.
CUHK and Greater Bay Science Forum Secretariat Hold Discussion Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) held an online discussion meeting on 12 May with the Secretariat of Greater Bay Science Forum (GSF) initiated by the Alliance of International Science Organizations in the Belt and Road Region (ANSO). Professor Rocky Tuan, Vice-Chancellor and President of CUHK and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement joined the meeting. GSF Secretariat participants included Mr. Nie Xiao-Wei, Director; Mr. Zhao Yan-Fei, Associate Director; Mr. Wan Zi-Qian, Associate Director of Industry-University-Research Integration Branch, Department of Science and Technology of Guangdong Province. The two parties discussed plans of co-organizing a GSF sub-forum on innovative biomedicine in Hong Kong. CUHK will also host distinguished lecture series as a special GSF warm-up event in dedication to the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. A collaboration framework agreement was proposed to establish long-term partnership, covering scientific research talents, promotion of knowledge transfer and support for positioning CUHK-related projects in Guangzhou Nansha.
Initiated by the Chinese Academy of Science, ANSO is an international, non-profit and non-governmental scientific organization for identifying and addressing common issues in the Belt and Road Region to tackle world scientific challenges. Founding members include scientific and research organizations from Russia, Pakistan, Poland, Hungary, Nepal, Kenya, Netherlands, New Zealand and Brazil. CUHK is the only institution from Hong Kong in the Alliance. CUHK took part in GSF 2021 themed “Exploring the Future, Sharing Scientific Achievement” and co-organized the sustainable development sub-forum with ANSO with theme of “Rebuilding Our Common Future: Safe, Sustainable and Resilient Planet for All”.
CUHK and University of Science and Technology of China Have Collaboration Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) held online meeting on 15 June to discuss future collaboration plans. CUHK participants included Professor Wang Jian-Fang, Chairperson of Department of Physics; Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement; and Ms. Samantha Wong, Assistant Director of China Engagement. USTC representatives comprised Professor Han Liang, Associate Dean of School of Physical Sciences; Mr. Qu Kun and Mr. Wang Chen, Director and Deputy Director of Office of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Affairs. Discussions were held on a range of initiatives, including collaborative agreement, talent nurturing, joint research projects, academic exchange and training of managerial staff.
Since the signing of academic exchange agreement in 1992, CUHK and USTC have achieved fruitful results in research collaboration and nurturing of talents. This meeting bolstered the linkage to establish closer platform between the two universities.
CUHK and Hainan University Holds Online Meeting
The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and Hainan University (HNU) held online meeting on 17 May to explore collaboration opportunities. CUHK representatives comprised Professor Martin Wong, Dean of Faculty of Engineering; Prof. Xu Jianbin, Assistant Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; Ms. Jenny Lu, Board Member of Shaw College; and Ms. Wing Wong, Director of China Engagement. HNU participants included Professor Yang Tian-Ruo, Academic Vice President; Professor Liu Hua-Zhong, Deputy Dean of School of Computer Science and Technology; Professor Wang Xiao-Kang of School of Computer Science and Technology; and representatives of CUHK-HNU Cooperation Promotion Association. Participants discussed potential plans in joint training programs and research collaboration in the field of supercomputing.
CUHK and HNU have established partnership since 2017. CUHK Faculty of Business Administration and HNU Management School signed a collaboration agreement in 2021 to further enhance the connection and communication, aspiring to expand new collaborative areas.
