Image-guided robotic interventions is playing a pivotal role in the development of more holistic and effective procedures for surgeries. Image-guidance complements surgical robotics with detailed real-time imaging information serve as visual feedback to the surgeon, also as direct observation to the robotic control system. With multi-modal visual assessment and precise surgical tool manipulation, an ultimate aim for improved procedural workflow, surgeon ergonomics and patient outcomes can be achieved.
During the past decade, the MRC research team has achieved significant multiple impacts. Professor AU Kwok-Wai Samuel was a pioneer for the early development of the image-guided, robotic-assisted catheter system for peripheral lung biopsy (da Vinci ION), which recently underwent a 30-patient clinical trial in Brisbane, Australia with remarkable results. Professor LIU Yun-Hui and his team were among the first to develop algorithms for automatic tissue manipulation based on real-time visual camera image feedback and successfully implemented them on the state-of-the-art dVRK. Professor KWOK Ka-Wai designed and developed high performance intra-operative MRI-guided robotic systems for cardiac electrophysiology and stereotactic neurosurgery to enhance surgical safety under these surgeries. Professor Russell TAYLOR is one of the world's leaders in the field of image-guided robotics. He and his team take the lead in the development of flexible robotic debridement tools to address the core decompression problem for Femoral Head Osteonecrosis.
Expanding on the MRC's track record in the image-guided robotic interventions, this program will further integrate the key components together to set out various robotic platforms to address fundamental clinical problems. The MRC hopes to make unremitting efforts and bring these technologies from bench to bedside and provide safer, more precise, and effective diagnosis and treatment to the patients through the adoption of image-guided robotic technologies.
